TLDR : Answer Summary
Many users shared their experiences regarding traveling to Thailand on a one-way ticket when applying for a retirement visa. While some airlines, including Turkish Airlines, may allow one-way tickets for travelers intending to apply for a retirement visa, it can be risky. Airlines often require proof of onward travel, and it is recommended to have a ticket out of Thailand booked or to use services that provide temporary flight reservations. Obtaining a 90-day retirement visa in your home country before traveling is another advised strategy, although there are options to secure a tourist visa upon arrival as a workaround.

is cheaper to book a one way bus ticket out of thailand to malaysia or cambodia, from the closest border town to the closest border town. i was asked by my airline for return or onward ticket and just told them i'm planning to apply for extension and plan to take bus to malaysia when my visa expires and they were fine with that and the thai customs ok with that too. i never booked anything in advance.

I came here on a one way ticket with Turkish from Manchester in 2019. Never got asked by anyone or asked to see my visa.

Get a 60 day tourist visa then you have no problem, extend that by 30 days, apply for your non o in Thailand then get retirement extension gives you 15months before you need to renew
it's a real reservation, not a real ticket. The company books a reservation in your name and then cancels it. They send you the confirmation on the reservation, but the seat gets released back for purchase. It's a pretty sleazy business model and a violation of airline COC and I'm surprised this company has not been sued yet.
I flew in from Turkey on a one way ticket no questions asked at all

Get the 90-day retirement visa in your home country. Then no need for onward ticket and you have three months to organise getting the 12-month extension in Thailand
Don't you need to get "Life Insurance" with that 90 Visa if you get it in your own country...Unlike when getting it in Thailand, you do not need that insurance?
It's the airlines that are the gatekeepers not Thai immigration. The fact that you're going to get a retirement visa 'means' you don't need a return ticket etc. If its Turkish airlines it should be ok, explain to them you were advised not to get a return b/c you are retiring in Thailand.

If you have no visa it is very risky to fly on a one way ticket they will probably refuse you. There are websites that let you book tickets and then get a refund (less a small charge) for this very reason. Sorry I can’t remember the names, they basically rent you a ticket to get round your problem. Do a Google search. Otherwise yes book a ticket out of Thailand. On the few occasions I have travelled on a one way they have always asked for a booking out of Thailand.
