Do I need a visa for transiting through China on a flight from Bangkok to Melbourne?

Has anyone flown China Eastern Airlines from BKK to MEL via CAN (Guangzhou) with a 1 hour 50 minute transit in China, baggage checked through to Melbourne?

Both flights use the same terminal so my question is:

Will I need a visa for China?

TLDR : Answer Summary
If you are transiting through Guangzhou on a flight from Bangkok to Melbourne with a layover of 1 hour and 50 minutes, you generally do not need a visa for China as long as you stay in the same terminal and do not leave the transit area. Various comments confirm that under these conditions, you can transit without a visa.

Of course not!

No. You transit in the same terminal. Done it several times.

You won't have a problem. Really quiet airport almost everyone is transit. Walk past the first lot of electronic daft machines where where people are lined up. There's more upstairs. Can't get lost. Can't miss your flight. Cheap too. Food's edible and you get a wine and beer. Cheers.

the one gripe is the internet is censored 😅 if you're not used to that aspect of China it'll be inconvenient to use most messaging platforms or scroll social media on your layover.

thanks for that. I wasn’t thinking of Googling Tiananmen Square but I might see if I can contact Chinese friends on We Chat and tell them that I’m in China!

Depends on what passport you have

Foreign citizens travelling to a third country or region through China by plane, ship or train may stay up to 24 hours in China without a visa. Have not flown that route but 150mins is enough providing initial flight is on time.
