TLDR : Answer Summary
The inquiry concerns whether a round-trip ticket is necessary for entering Thailand with plans for a year-long stay. The discussion reveals that a standard tourist visa does not allow a year-long stay and that entry requirements often include proof of onward travel, which could be a round-trip ticket. Suggestions include obtaining a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa for longer stays and being aware that airlines and Thai immigration may request proof of onward travel regardless of intentions.

And I believe that
@Camron *******
now understands that BOTH the airline bringing them here (if they're comin' in visa exempt) AND thailand when they stamp into the country at passport control CAN ask for proof of onward travel. As David Broadfoot correctly pointed out, it doesn't matter how long you "intend" to be here in the glorious "Land 'O Thaiz" it matters HOW you're entering the country (visa exempt, tourist visa, Non-Immigrant visa, etc).

Good Luck.

Seeing you posted the same time, do you have all the requirements to apply for the Non Immigrant ED visa? If you have a valid visa in your passport the airline usually not ask for onward travel.

If you like to stay longer time get the Multiple Entry Tourist Visa, valid for 6 months and on each entry you get 60 days of stay. Buy an onward travel within this 60 days to an nearby country. If you plan correctly you can get almost 270 days of stay out of this visa in sections of 60 days.

yeah well its gonna have to suffice until they create one that does fit my situation

Not understand the question here, but yeah, if you choose to live inside Thailand using tourist visa you take the chance of getting questioned and denied entry. The tourist visa is not the correct visa for the purpose of your stay.

I'm onto my 3rd metv. Gonna be going through Don Meung next month. Getting worried they will interrogate me or deny me entry. Seems like its a crapshoot now

I don't think you can stay for a year on a tourist visa

And your airline may ask to see a return ticket when you check in for your flight.

Koal Hill Also as the answer above, you statement is incorrect.

@Damien ******
Incorrect, Normally the Non Immigrant ED visa is a Single Entry and gives you 90 days of stay on entry. Before these 90 days are finished you apply for the Extension of Stay with documents from the school and than you have to do the 90 day reporting of staying in Thailand.
