Do I need to continuously work remotely or be in classes for the 5 years of the DTV?
What happens after if I work remotely for a year and then stop? Or if I go to cooking classes for 9 months and stop?
Answer summary
The DTV (Digital Nomad Visa) for Thailand allows entry over a 5-year period but does not require continuous engagement in work or classes. Visa holders can stay up to 180 days at a time, with a possible extension. There is ambiguity regarding requirements for ongoing activities associated with the visa; local immigration officers may assess the holder’s compliance based on their presence and activities. Some visa holders report being questioned on their activities, especially if they no longer meet the initial visa prerequisites like attending classes or working. Generally, if you maintain a respectful demeanor during interactions with immigration, you are less likely to have issues.

There is no written law about this, nor is there a written directive for IOs (I have checked their operating procedure in Thai). Once you have your visa, permission to enter is granted by the IO. These are 2 different processes. The IO has the power to check to ensure you still "fit" under your visas' pre-requisites. From what I have seen/heard/ read, the people with DTV who have the most problems are the ones with a soft power category. Some IOs have said that "Since your visa was granted under a 6-12 month cooking course, and the course is finished, you do not meet the criteria to enter under this VISA" ... Theoretically they are correct. The best example to prove this is the people who have a 1 year extension under marriage ("marriage visa") who then divorce lose their "marriage visa" immediately and need to exit the Kingdom within a certain number of days (or convert their visa to another one); same goes for work visa. Lose your job, you cannot continue to use this visa...
For people who work remotely, I am aware of people being asked "how did you get your DTV?" : they replied appropriately (remote work and describe what they do) and they had no issues with the IO. Most of these people have their laptops and can open and show some semblance of remote work if need be...
More unwritten rule stuff: if you look and behave like a twit in front of the IO, there are more chances you will be questioned or challenged by the IO. Be clean, be polite and respectful and things are more likely to be OK.
There’s lots of uncertainty associated with the DTV (not DVT). Understand that it’s a 5 year visa but that does not mean that the holder is allowed to stay in Thailand for 5 years. It means that over the course of 5 years the visa holder is allowed to come to Thailand and request entry.
Each entry is limited to 180 days, with the possibility of an extension of 180 days. Then the DTV holder must leave.
How long must the DTV stay out of Thailand before requesting to enter again? There’s no specific requirement.
Must re-entries be for the same reason as specified in the application for the first entry? One might think so but again there seems to be no specific requirement.
In summary, there’s no clear answer to your question. Just a lot of conjecture and varying experience.
Jeffrey A Hynds the possible extension is for another 180 days, not 280. :) And people have been requested to prove that their initial criteria to obtain the DTV are still valid when they seek an extension beyond the 180 days (including the money in bank). Easier to just go out of country for a few days and come back, resets the initial 180 days.
The workcation is for those working remotely, if you're not doing that, then you're breaking the rules of the visa. If you do a course of 9 months there isn't any reason for you to stay a further 4.3 years.
not accurate, you are required to show documents on entering the country if I have a 1 year remote contract and try enter after three years they will ask to see a valid contract..
I would love to be other than scrolling top down through all the posts, I don't see an easy way to find the ones on this subject. If there is a way and I'm missing it, I'd appreciate some tips.
When you enter the country Immigration can ask you to show proof of your remote employment or an ongoing Soft Power activity, depending on what is your DTV based on. It is expected that you use the visa for its intended purpose
