If you get the DTV for Muay Thai, are you expected to keep doing it for the entire 5 years? Or is first 6 months enough?
Answer summary
The DTV (Digital Thailand Visa) for Muay Thai may require ongoing commitment to training throughout its five-year duration. While some suggest that completing a six-month course initially might suffice, others caution that immigration may inquire about continued involvement in training. Reports indicate that individuals can be asked for proof of ongoing classes, particularly in regions like Phuket. Therefore, maintaining an active training status could be advisable to avoid issues upon re-entry and ensure compliance with visa regulations.

It was not like that last year, but they are now very strict about it and you need to have the letter from the gym, even the payment receipt every time you enter thailand. So yes, you do have to be enrolled in muay thai for all 5 years.
As long as you're staying in the kingdom it would be better to be training few times a week at the gym, that's what your visa is for, and if you will be asked to prove it-
you want to have a gym and trainers that actually knows you.
First off if you apply for DTV but pay for a six month course, you won’t get the DTV, they will give you a visa to match the time frame that’s needed. So thoroughly think about why you want to be here and apply for a Visa to match the time frame you’d need
Anonymous participant 743 I have been told by a well known Muay Thai gym owner the 1 month course is still being approved but don't argue with James he is the group expert.
You are exactly the reason why so many people are having problems with the DTV and why the immigration authorities are discussing phasing out DTV in the coming years.
Looks like you're not familiar with the DTV regulations. The Thai authorities don't like people who cheat. That's exactly why there's a discussion within the government about abolishing the DTV.
Anonymous participant 668 there's lots of people with nothing going on in their lives who like to feel morally superior. If they were to stop whining about DTV, they'd immediately find the next thing to feel morally superior about. Best to avoid those types (they live in their own safe-space/bubble). They'll always find something to complain about and try to make themselves feel better than others.
Anonymous participant You're welcome, unfortunately there's a lot of DTV haters in this group and many who think they're superior because they applied via workation. And then there's numerous bored pensioners trolling. My advice is don't stick around here after you get the DTV unless you want to help fight back.
Anonymous participant 668 between you and 1-2 other useful commenters, I basically have a very, very good idea of what to do now. Thank you to the rare but useful people out there! (despite the noisy idiots you've had to contend with 🤣)
Anonymer Teilnehmer 668 Wrong! I personally know of cases where immigration authorities have asked language schools and cooking classes about the presence of DTV holders.
If your initial sponsor for the visa is a Muay Thai gym in Bangkok, and you train there for 3 months, can you then move to Chiang Mai to practice Muay Thai?
Anonymous participant 668 I cannot understand why are you so hostile, because I don’t wanna show people my name and surname and that I stay in Thailand?
I just kindly said that I was asked for a new enrolment letter alongside other things. But I stay nearly 180days every entry.
Anonymous participant 668 That’s why an IO may ask you further questions about your work or classes. I don’t see how this information helps if you’re no longer subscribed to classes and can’t provide proof of ongoing enrollment. You'll need to show one or another.
So paying for the equivalent of a McDonald’s Happy Meal is contributing towards the economy too? I mean that’s what you’re technically doing. 35K spread out how many months? I mean that’s my monthly grocery budget.
If you're paying for courses, that person is indeed adding to the economy, and also engaging in Thai culture... So STFU and mind your own business! 👌🏿
so are you trying to say that someone actually paying for your on going muay thai courses don’t doesn’t count for helping economy…. That makes no sense…
hope you as old man. It can not come back agen it’s effects the economy for 100% sure young people bring hope and money and you old 🐖 bring bad hope just you know!
From my understanding you just need to show proof ur enrolled when leaving and coming back to Thailand. If you don’t travel much you probably wouldn’t need more than one enrollment for the first year and then every time you leave and come back you’d probably want proof that you’re coming back to learn something.
Those are troll stories. There are no verifiable reports of DTV holders being denied entry for the sole reason of not being enrolled upon a qualifying cultural course or being currently employed.
Barnabas Collins the rules may say that but I’ve just seen so many stories of people getting denied entry because they aren’t enrolled in any classes, so that’s why i said that.
sounds reasonable. Although I don’t think when leaving Thailand they wouldn’t check anything they’d just let you leave but they’ll likely check it on each return
Immigration have no say in the DTV and requirements, but entry is at there discretion, so take your chances if you think a 6 month is enough as they definitely can and will reject your entry if they think you have abused your visa and will cancel it without a second thought
There's a boxing ring at BKK suv airport. I was pulled aside last time I exited and they quizzed me on my visa and Muay Thai training and made me go 3 rounds with a policeman out the back. Lucky I'd actually put effort in at training cause he was hard AF.. They then let me out saying I was good to go and I flew out. They do the same with education visas they talk to you in Thai. They aren't stupid..
BravePersimmon1025 I asked AI before posting here, and this is pretty much what it said. It searched the internet and said there's not actually any information on precisely this question on the Thai visa sites, but heaps of people ask about it, yet they don't clarify what the actual answer is.
I can't imagine someone doing a cooking course for 5 years! There's only so much Pad Thai you can make!
Anonymous participant 565 yeah I was wrong about that. You can obviously keep learning forever. (I originally had in mind someone like me just learning cooking for the DTV, not someone who wants to actually learn the cuisine incredibly deeply)
Anonymous participant 👍 Thailand has so many different kitchens. The tourist hotspots tend to become thaidonalds. On top of that there are so many people that just eat western food. Look in Pattaya food groups. 🤷
There have been a small number of reports, mostly from Phuket, of people being asked to provide proof of ongoing classes. If your question is whether you'll be fine for the next five years without ongoing classes subscription and without any risk, that's becoming increasingly unlikely.
BraveOwl3854 Big upfront cost. Plus the risk that the dojo closes down and you could lose all your money. That happens with gym memberships all the time (not just in thailand)
Anonymous participant The only way to be more certain is to have 5 years of muay thai lined up and video proof you train. But the cost for that is so high, might as well get the bronze privilege visa and dodge the hassles of the DTV. Youre not supposed to live on the DTV. Immigration making that clear now.
Anonym deltager Well they can ask for proof of you training, and there you will be expected to prove that you are a member of a Muay Thai gym, and the gym will have to confirm your membership, also having recent pictures of you training at the gym is a very good supplement to have in addition to the membership.
Participante anónimo yea it’s legit they expect you to boost Thai economy by paying for training for five years. Don’t have to compete or go super hard even 1 time a week cardio class is enough
You need to fight the top immigration officer to enter to prove your skills. If you lose they only allow entry for 1 month at a time to train then you need to leave the country. When you come back and can prove that you can TKO him they are satisfied you have completed your soft power course and allow entry until the Visa expiration.
