My husband and I were thinking of traveling to Thailand in the new year on a tourist visa and then extending upon arrival. Does anyone know if you have to have proof of exit on a tourist visa? I’m in Canada

TLDR : Answer Summary
Travelers from Canada planning to enter Thailand on a tourist visa may be required to show proof of onward travel. It is essential to check with the airline, as some, like Air Canada and Emirates, have strict policies regarding this. Many travelers have reported needing an exit plan to board their flights, though requirements can vary. Having a return ticket or an onward travel itinerary is generally advisable to avoid complications at the airport.

Have a flight out. Return flight is not always necessary.

It's always wise to have a return flight . We're from the US , first flight to Thailand we had an exit plan than the 2nd flight to Thailand , no exit plan , one way and we flew via Japan Airline . She asked and we said nope , we're moving forward just don't know how or when ?

It’s the airline you need to check

Your going to be turned away at the airport in Canada. Air Canada is particularly strict with this. I have an itinerary longer than my visa and it's going to take me some persuading. Plan b is to book a flight out of Thailand.

have flown Air Canada, Westjet, EVA, ANA, United out of Canada. All wanted proof of onward travel with our visa exempt and the tourist visa. When we came in August, with re-entry permit on a long stay extension Air Canada asked for proof on onward travel. Took us 3 attempts and 15 minutes to explain it wasn't required. We were ready to ask for a supervisor when the attendant finally understood.

You need to ask your airline. They are the only ones that might ask for this.

it really depends on the airline. But it seems to be commonly checked in your area of the world.

defintely yes as airlines have been advised it's their cost to transport you home if you are denied entry to Thailand. ....You can buy an onward ticket for $10 or $12 on sites to satisfy this requirement or an airline ticket that allows you to change return flight date. Here's an article on this subject.
