TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation centers around the implications of having an amount of 800,000 baht frozen in a bank account, particularly relating to Thai immigration requirements. Users discuss the conditions under which banks freeze accounts, the possibility of accessing funds, and the general guidelines that govern foreign individuals' banking needs in Thailand. Key points include that while an amount may be frozen, account holders can still perform other transactions as usual, although access to the frozen funds is restricted.

My friend asked what if he needed the money in an emergency the bank lady said open another account and put some money in there

The purpose of having 800,000 baht in an account is so you have funds, if required, for emergency treatment.

For a bank to decide to have access to these funds frozen is totally against the reason why immigration want a foreigner to have a considerable amount available at all times.

Requirements in Thailand by different organisations seem contradictory at times.

Another example is organising an O visa and having a bank account - the old chicken and egg dilemma.

If the 800k in your account will be used for as you say having funds, then there's no problem. But if you're going to use it at immigration, then the purpose is not for having the total amount the whole year. You must have 800k in the account 5 months and then never go below 400k until you need to top it up again to 800k. So,the amount for lets say emergencies is 400k for 7 months. That's the way it works.

Assume you're asking about getting the bank letter from Bangkok Bank. If you don't have the required funds in your account for 4 months already at the time you request the letter, they will freeze that amount in your account for 4 months. You can still use your account as usual, you just cannot access the frozen amount.

what's your opinion on the 3 month thing? I think their over stepping the mark? What if they refuse a letter and someone gets told to leave the country even if they've had the money the required amount of time for immigration.

Banks can do whatever they want. They're a business. You have the choice, keep the money in the bank for 4 months before you need the letter, then you don't have to freeze anything. Or freeze the money for 4 months if not. Or get a new bank. Immigration is irrelevant.

with all due respect immigration isn't irrelevant.. Far from it, immigration require 2 months.. Bangkok Bank have decided that 4 is their requirement? They in effect decide if your getting the visa if your moneys been in 2 months but not 4...what happens if someone gets deported for it??

Also, they freeze you money which is supposed to be for medical emergencies etc.. When it's frozen how can you access in said emergency, defeats the object?
