Is it acceptable to keep the 800k in a separate account for visa extension purposes in Thailand?

Hi. I have a single thai savings account keeping the 800k as well as monthly xfers of 65k. I regularly draw from the 65k for living expenses with a debit card.

I would like to seperate these to 2 different accounts so the 800k is 100% safe.

If I go to the bank and ask for a second account, is it important to keep the 800k in the same account? Or will immigration accept seeing it bump over to the other account?

I ask because of the debit card - if I should request one for the new account or if they tell me to use the one card for the current account. Hope that makes sense. I will ask the same question at the bank but welcome any pointers here for immigration purposes. Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user seeks advice on whether they can separate their 800,000 THB savings for visa requirements into two different bank accounts while still complying with immigration regulations. They express concern about the implications of using a debit card and whether immigration will accept the funds being moved between accounts. Community responses suggest that it is advisable to keep the 800K in the same account for safety and to avoid potential complications during visa extension processes.

Pretty sure I can add a new account from the banking app (KTB)

Keep in mind I haven't tried it, so it may be not so simple

You can also use a wise account that gives you a physical card and virtual card numbers (for online shopping)

You should also be able to put a temporary block on your card so if people steal your card info they can't buy anything unless you unlock your card

Safer to leave the 800k in the account and not chance a mix up.

A friend just got denied an extension because there was a 5 baht drop 1 day.

I had an account with Bangkok Bank with the 800,000 for the yearly visa extension. As I didn't want to touch that money I just opened a second account with Bangkok Bank which is used for day to day expenses.

You can just open a bank account at another bank if you don't want to touch the 800k.

yes, but i am assuming all the paperwork required the first time would be reduced if using the same bank.

Not really in my case. I opened a second account in another province.

At first they even wanted me to take out another insurance with them. 😅

If you are depositing 65k+ monthly why do you keep the 800k, you don't need both?

this is my first year - must keep the 800k for 2 more months (total of 5) amd if I'm going to transition to 65k/month only next year, I need to be doing the 65k deposits now also.
Jack *****
try the current bank first with your desire for a second account... if not.. maybe open up an account in different bank for the 800K.... when the timing is correct??

Short before the next extension you should start with 65k. Before don't make sense if I am not mistaken.

@Tim *****
It should be 65k a full year before the extension, so it makes sense.

I'm not sure if we misunderstand each other. My 2nd extension is on Nov 2025. If I now start transferring 65k/m then I only have 11 months on the day of my 2nd extension on Nov 2025. So I start transferring 65k/m Oct 2025 to have 12 months on the day of my 3rd extension on Nov 2026.

@Tim *****
yes, so you start about 13 months before your new extension where you want to use the 65k rule, that is not short before in my opinion.
@Alan ******
is in his first year, so if he started with 65k just before his first extension, he can switch to 65k method for his second extension.

Now the 800k rule for the first extension still is in place and at the same time he is preparing to switch.

As you describe, you switch a year later.

@Alan ******
ok, you seem to have it figured but I still cannot see why you need 2 accounts if you manage the balance correctly

for sole reason of not trusting myself to accidentally overdraft from online payments, etc...

I did this a couple of years ago and kept the 800k in the same account. I explained what I wanted to do and the reasons and they cancelled the card for my original account and gave me a new one for my new account instead.

Having said that, I never use the debit card these days anyway as I always use the cardless withdrawal option on my phone, so I kind of wish I had opted to not have a card (if that's possible).

I recently opened a second BBL account in another province and got a new debit card. 2 BBL accounts and a debit card for each account.

I was about to do the same but the bank will not let me open another account

Lucky you. Bangkok bank tolme i can’t open a 2nd account with same passport. Mine is from isaan but I’m living in Bangkok now. More convenient having a local branch

which bank? I have 2 accounts with Bkk bank.

Bkk Bank. They told me I would have to get a Yellow book, a work permit or a letter from my embassy. I have a DL and a certificate of residency from immigration and they still said no.

youch! TiT it's amazing the different responses you can get simply depending on the individual at the bank. It's definitely possible to have 2 accounts at the same branch, because I have 2 and I didn't need to provide yellow book or work permit.
