Can you change from a tourist visa to a business visa in Thailand without leaving the country, and is there a visa exemption for pregnancy?

A couple of questions which I'm hoping you well informed people can help me out with:

1. Can you change from a tourist visa to a business visa without leaving the country?

2. Can you get a visa exemption for being pregnant and how would you go about it? I've read some things but would like to hear from somebody that has either done this or is well informed about it.

My wife is pregnant and is on a tourist visa and will work for 3 months and her company will provide her a 3 month business visa. Ideally we would want her on the business visa and then a visa exemption to have the baby. Just worried about her having to leave the country whilst pregnant.

Thanks in advance!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring whether it's possible to change from a tourist visa to a business visa without exiting Thailand and if a visa exemption exists for pregnant women. Comments suggest that it is feasible to transition to a Non-Immigrant Type B visa domestically, depending on the employer's capability. Additionally, there is a medical extension available for expecting mothers, which requires adequate documentation from a healthcare provider. However, it's crucial to be aware that applications for medical extensions could be denied if immigration believes travel is possible.

You should not have had to go back to the US for your visa. Sometimes they can't do it in Bangkok, but there's usually an embassy much closer than that where they can.

Thanks for the input everyone. My wife's company said they can provide the business visa without leaving the country. We will apply for the extension of stay for medical reasons once that visa is up. Thanks again everybody!

The pregnant side of visa. From about 5 to 6 months the hospital gives you a letter to get visa from Immigration. After delivery it depends on your doctor how long you can stay in the country before you start going out for visas. Some give you a month some 3 months depending on your case.

No.

Just one shit of paper. Printed signed and stamped by the doctor. Immigration have their own doctor too. His decision is final though.

Did you need a LOT of documentation from the doctor and the hospital to get those extensions or did the hospital do it for you?

I know at Bumrungrad hospital they do medical extensions at the hospital on Saturday's from 8-11am.

Yeah! Thats true.

I went through the process while in Bangkok.

That's a medical extension based on the inability to travel, and they can be issued for no more than 90 days at a time for 1900baht. So depending on how long the immigration office gives you, you might have to go back and get another extension or two.

Hmm, there is no free pass to stay here while pregnant :O and she'd need to either continue on her Non-B with an extension or go get tourist visas.

There is however an extension of stay based on medical reasons which can be gotten from the immigration office for 1900baht and which are granted for 90 days at a time.

I'd ask where ever she's getting her prenatal care if they can supply the documentation to go apply for the medical extension.

FWIW; you need some serious documentation to pull those "can't travel need a medical extension" and if the immigration office thinks she can travel they'll just deny the application outright.

Depending on the company you work for you can indeed go from a tourist visa (or even a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp) to 90 day Non-Immigrant Type B visa inside the country.

Usually the company you're getting the job from will tell you if they can do it inside the country or send you to a thai consulate in another country to get the Non-B.

Very interesting. First time going through this. Kinda strange to sign a work contract, come back to the US, then go back. I was thinking that since it was a BOI company they could do it inside the country.

@Sada*****
, it is totally up to the company as far as if they send you out of the country to a thai consulate or do it inside the country. The documentation is different and some can't meet the requirements to do it in country.

Hmm...this is interesting
@Tod ********
. Can you please elaborate on this? I was told to come back to the US to get the 90 day Non-Immigrant Type B visa for employment, so I'm back here trying to get one.
