My British child (8 years old) studies at an English program school. I'm also British and my wife, the child's mother, is from Laos. If my son gets an Ed extension through his school, can both my wife and I get Extensions of Stay that 'piggyback' on his?

TLDR : Answer Summary
In Thailand, visa rules dictate that only one parent can obtain an Extension of Stay based on a child's Ed visa extension.

No you cannot

it's ONE parent per child.

Thanks. So, I could get a Retirement extension and my wife could piggy back on our son's Ed extension ... Or, I just get a Retirement extension and both my wife and son piggyback on that?

, we had report of that someone could get Non-O dependent (spouse) on a foreigner who is legally staying Thailand on an extension based on being over 50 from Penang. I think it's worth to call the Thai embassy/consulate in Laos if they issue those visa even not on the website, especially your wife is Lao national.

If they do, both of your wife and child can be dependent on your retirement extension. If not, as Tod says above, get Non-ED and Non-O guardian with 500K in a Thai bank.

Your best bet is to get the child and ED visa, get the mother the guardian visa (taking care of a foreign child legally enrolled in a school on an ED visa) by banking the 500K baht in a thai bank account in her name only for the requisite time. and you should get the retirement,.

After you have the mother get the 90 day Non-O based on caring for a foreign child here and get the year extension

Then the following year, when her extension comes due you COULD have her 'change the reason' for the extension to "trailing spouse" (as she'd already have had a Non-O visa and extension and would only be changing the reason for the next extension

Both my wife and son have lived here for 8 years as my dependents on my Work extension (they both initially had O visas). Things might have to change soon as I may no longer be able to get my annual extension. I may post about that separately!

neither person will be able to get a Non-O visa issued inside the country based on being the spouse or child of a person on a "retirement visa/extension"
