Hi. Please can I ask advice. My son is going volunteering in Thailand on the 31st of December for 10 weeks. Unfortunately despite applying several weeks ago we have not received his Visa yet. I’ve been unable to contact anyone by telephone and they’re not replying to our emails.

Will he be able to still go on a 30 day Visa and then extend it to 60 days.

If his volunteering Visa comes through in the meantime, is that okay? This is what he has been advised to do by the group that organising the volunteering, but when I look on the Internet, I don’t think it’s correct. I’m getting so stressed. Can anyone advise please

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice about their son's visa situation before traveling to Thailand for a 10-week volunteering program starting on December 31. They have not received the volunteering visa yet and are concerned about whether their son can travel on a 30-day visa and extend it. Comments suggest that if his nationality is eligible, he can enter Thailand on a visa-exempt basis for 30 days but cannot legally volunteer until he obtains the correct visa. Additionally, recommendations are made to contact the Thai embassy via Facebook for assistance with the visa application.

If you know which Thai embassy or consulate is processing the application (I'm assuming it's e-visa) then try finding that specific office on Facebook and sending them a message. Many of the consulates and embassies are better at replying on Facebook for some reason.

For the best odds of getting a reply, keep it to a single message that is short and precise. Include the question and any relevant information in that single message.

Something like: Hello, I would like to check the status of a non-O volunteer visa application number xxxxx submitted on 15 November 2023 for Firstname Lastname with passport number. His flight is 31 December so we are hoping the visa will be issued by this date.

Thank you

If his nationality is eligible for visa-exempt, yes, he can enter Thailand on visa-exempt for 30 days. And he can apply for 30 days extension on it. BUT he cannot do volunteer work legally when he is on his visa-exempt entry and touristm extension.

When his visa comes after he enters Thailand, he needs to leave Thailand (by air or land), enter Thailand again using his Non-O visa based on volunteering. Then he can start volunteer work permit procedure and volunteering.

thats wrong. Its almost always the airline that takes resoonsibility for not accepting passengers with no onward ticket- not immigration. He wouldnt even have gotten on the plane to reach immigration.

There is no reason to be streased he can enter on tourist and do his voluntary work, no one is arresting legit volunteers from legit charitys he can do it on any visa for time being untill his tourist visa runs out and needs to switch. Be real here, in 13 years I have no ever heard of a volunteer or legit charity being harassed by immigration the ones being abused by visa mills are easily distinguished everything else is jobsworth advice.

, it's not 100% and depends on the organization and type of volunteering if I understood right. But I may be wrong.

, well actually some airlines were asking for that ( read previous posts on this page) immigration will hardly ever question your ticket status..just going on experience 🙏🏿

That is not an airline issue but an Immigration issue. It helps no one if the air line does not care but he has no prove of onward travel when the immigration is asking for it.

ok, from Heathrow I take it..?

Just phone them at airport and ask them if they’re wanting onward ticket or return ticket with the 30 days...if they do just book a cheap ticket from Bangkok to Cambodia within the 1 month....cost about 30 quid...really don’t worry it will be fine...

When he arrives at Bangkok, there’s no forms to fill or anything, just a 30 day stamp...

another problem is his flight isn’t for 10 weeks after arriving so they’ve advised that he can book a flight/bus somewhere else that is not charged if you cancel it so he has got proof that he’s going to leave Thailand within 30 days, is this right??

If he is asked for onward travel, better to be within 30 days. Unless he has an extensive history of travelling to Thailand, the chance of the Thai immigration office asking is slim. But you may want to check the airline policy if they ask for onward travel when he checks in without a visa. If he has his issued visa, they don't ask for onward tickets.
