Question on switching from Non-OA retirement extension to ED visa

Hi all. My husband is on a non-OA based on retirement that he obtained in his home country, Taiwan. Previously in Thailand he had a “research” visa (similar to ED visa) with a university in Bangkok, a paid fellowship. Once that ended, he got the non-OA. Now the university is considering issuing him a new, paid, research visa. Question: if he cancels his current OA & works under the university visa for 1 or 2 years, will he have any problems re-applying again for the OA (or O) in the future? We are in Bangkok.

Thanks for any advice!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on transitioning from a Non-OA retirement visa to an ED visa for a new research contract at a university in Bangkok. Community members responded by indicating that if the Non-OA visa is within its first year, it cannot be canceled until it expires. After that, transitioning should pose no issues. A direct consultation with the Immigration Office was recommended for definitive guidance.

As long as you are here on the proper visa then I wouldn’t think you should have any problem switching from one visa to another. Sometimes people staying in Thailand on educational visas as students have future problems but it sounds like you are pursuing a work visa at a university.

Well, the university approached him about a new contract, so his current visa status will be part of his decision on whether to accept. Thanks for your input!

Thank you all! He'll see if the university can arrange for the new visa to start when the OA ends, it will be easier.

This is a question you need to get answered at the Immigration Office as they are the only people who can give you the requirements if indeed this is possible to do via their office.

No, he will have no problems in the future.

If he is in the very first year of the OA visa then he cannot cancel it. He has to wait until that first year runs out. The original visa has to expire. After that you have options.
