TLDR : Answer Summary
Traveling by motorcycle through Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia, and Cambodia, involves complex regulations and requirements. Malaysia and Cambodia are generally accessible with the proper documentation, but Vietnam may require a local guide if entering with your own bike, particularly if it has a certain engine size. Myanmar currently has restrictions on border crossings due to conflict. It's essential to prepare necessary paperwork and obtain insurance beforehand.

Vietname and Myamar tricky. Need official guide and Myanmar land border only open to Thais / Burmese I believe . Rest Ok, as long as bike is yours and paperwork ready
Bernard *****
Laos, Malaysia, Cambodia no problems.

Vietnam must pay a "guide" (expensive)

Myanmar closed

I did the whole of Vietnam without a guide. Not on a powerful bike though 6 years ago. Top to bottom

Did you enter with your own motorbike from Laos or Cambodia? ?

@Bernard ****
I rented through a company in Hanoi and dropped it to the same company in HCMCity

I didn't talk about this and the author of the post didn't. We talk about wanting to cross the border to Vietnam with our own motorbike with thai identification plate, driving from Laos or Cambodia. In this case you MUST have a Vietnamese guide (expensive) who is waiting for you at the border.

If you rent a motorbike in Vietnam, no need a guide.

@Bernard ****
no I rented through a company

You can go easily to Malaysia, Cambodia you can do but last I heard you have to go to a certain check point, and get an agent to arrange. Wouldn't even try Mynamar. Vietnam you can but there used to be some funny regulations about engine size, I think had to be less than 200cc.

wrong mate

You can ride China and Vietnam on any sized bike so long as you have a guide in both these countries

I’ve done e them both in a 1250 GS

with no problems and going again in 3 weeks

Malaysia & Cambodia is easy with relevant paperwork

Myanmar you cannot cross the border now with or without a bike due to the ongoing war.

Malaysia requires lots of paperwork too. And local insurance and road tax payment.

local insurance was only about 500 Baht for 21 Days. It is pre covid I did this so it may have changed. You need a simple carnet to bring the bike out and in. You use to be able to do at the border. 5 years ago so you need to check.

less than or more than? 🤔

It was a BS thing, I had 2 friends ride 1150cc BMW'S to China, they weren't allowed to cross in because they were over 200cc, soon fixed by putting a 198cc sticker over the 1150 sticker.

Do you think immigration officers are dumbs?

@Bernard ****
no, read the post , what I said is that they need to comply to the old written law, again this was some years back.
