Hi. I just wanted to check for retirement visa, if you have to wait until you are 50 before you apply, or is it possible to apply any time before you are 50? Also what is the application process? I am based in ChiangMai. Kind Regards, Gordon

TLDR : Answer Summary
To apply for a Non-Immigrant Type O visa based on retirement, you must be at least 50 years old. The application process requires that you first obtain a 90-day Non-O visa while in Thailand, specifically needing at least 21 days remaining on your current visa to do so. After acquiring the 90-day visa, you can apply for an extension of stay, which also requires that you meet certain financial criteria. Applications can be processed at the Chiang Mai immigration office.

Hello Tod Daniels ,please forgive me if you already answered this question..I live for n Canada. Is there any way the type O based on being 50+ be obtained in Canada? Or does the process take place in Thailand after entry into Thailand?

Thanks in advance

You have to submit original documents. If you do not have any original documents than a copy is allowed but these copies need to be notarized by a solicitor.

Tod , do you know if i need to get copies of my bank statement, medical report and criminal record check notarised by a solicitor even if I have the originals. The wording on the Thai embassy website in London is confusing

Contact or take a look at the website of the Thai Embassy or Consulate in Canada and see what they require for this visa.

You would apply for a year long, multi-entry Non-Immigrant Type O-A (Long Stay) visa at a thai consulate in your country before you come here. It requires a police back ground check, a medical certificate and meeting the financial requirements (BUT you can meet them by using money in your bank in your country).

@Gor***
, you first need to understand there is no one visa that is a "retirement visa' :O You would apply for a 90 day Non-Immigrant Type O <-(the O means other) based on being over 50 and meeting the financial requirements. You would need at least 21 days of stay left on your current stamp to do it. You can go to the Chiang Mai immigration office and they will give you a hand out as far as the documentation AND you can make an appointment to come back and apply for the 90 day Non-O visa.

Once oyu get that visa you wait until you have 30 days or less and then you apply for a yearly extension of stay by meeting the financial requirements

you need to be 50 to apply for both the Non-O visa and the yearly extension.

That visa & extension is actually based on you being over 50 and you meeting the financial requirements
