# 🚗I'm on Visa Exemption (entered Thailand Jan 15th) and want to buy and register a car in my name.

Online I read that I need a Residence Certificate + Passport to register it, but there's mixed information (some say some offices also ask for a long term Visa)

Has anyone had an experience with this? I'm in Samui and the car I want to buy will be registered in Bangkok
Answer summary
If you are on a Visa Exemption in Thailand and want to register a car, you will typically need a Residence Certificate and your passport. There are mixed reports about whether a long-term visa is necessary, but many confirm it is possible to register a vehicle under a Visa Exemption, especially if you have a fixed address. The car registration process involves obtaining various documents, including a blue book for the car and sometimes requires a check at an inspection office. Note that during the registration period, a temporary red license plate is issued which has specific travel limitations. Overall, experiences can vary based on local immigration office policies.

rent a car. it's not that hard and it'll be a lot cheaper for you in the long run on that type of a Visa. if you're planning on staying and switching to a long-term Visa then know that you cannot get a loan and you will only be able to pay with cash. there's a lot of shady vehicles here for sale used. so be careful there.

again I recommend you rent.

disclaimer I purchased My Ford ranger. it took almost 4 months for me to get the proper paperwork in order to register it. The engine had been switched and not properly documented. this all happened around the earthquake time in Bangkok and so instead of just giving the car back I took it out to the provinces where I live. in the end it all worked out fine and I like the car a lot. 4x4 strong engine transmission is good just the headlights suck.

When I purchased a truck in February last year I was in visa exempt, they required residence certificate which I had to have a fixed address where I had a utility bill, I had to use a Thai friends address.

Red plate comes with a brown book so you can drive anywhere, white plates came in 4 weeks.

What I did find out if your on a plate from another province and want to sell to another foreigner you both have to go to that province, the buyer and seller require residence certificates, we swapped from a BKK plate to Chonburi plate and used an agent.

Second hand car .can be purchased no issues on 60 day tourist entry stamp u need a former from immigration to register it and the form only lasts 30 days from issue date so get car then form then take to any inspection garage ( have a blue sign with sort of a large cog logo on ) they do a simple inspection u give them your form along with a forms from seller they do rest and call u once they get book back

Gents, may I say, Thailand at times have the cart in front of the horse, but humility and persistence do prevail

You are first given a temporary red plate. You have to wait 2 or 3 months to go back to the dealer to go to DLT in Bangkok, or send the dealer your original passport with a new residence certificate if your original is more than 60 days old, to get your registration and white plates.

Where will the car be when you / if you buy it ?

You will need a residence certificate from immigration

Copy of passport

Copy of rental agreement

Yes different immigration may have different rules

All registered cars in Thailand have a blue book

The blue book needs to be transferred from current owner to new owner

if you buy a new car, you have to wait for the white license to be issued at a later date, generally between 3 and 5 months! In the meantime that car will have a red plate, and you are NOT ALLOWED to drive the car outside of the province where you bought it. You could possibly get refused to bring it onto a ferry on red plates

Nongnuch Kamdee That's not correct. You can drive the car out of the province you just have to bring the log book. but it's advised to keep it inside where you live until you get the proper plates.

You can indeed travel outside your province on Red Plate. I've done it. The only stipulation is you keep a log book (supplied by the dealer) for every journey outside your province.

Lloyd Landrie Exactly what we did. Our registered address and province was over 700kms from BKK. When plates arrived after two months we posted them with the log book back to the Mitsubishi dealership.

you can get a brown book along with the red plates that allows you to document any trips out of the province but you can't simply move elsewhere. Oh and unless things have changed you also can't drive after 6pm on red plates

Ok, so he doesn’t need a long term visa to buy a vehicle, correct ?

Another thing I heard is if I buy a used car, besides blue book, to make sure I get the “two original keys”. What’s this two original keys about ? Are they the car remote controllers ? What if 1st owner lost it or it was damaged ? Does that mean without 2 remote controllers, ppl will shun buying his car ? *Scratch head*

Thanks everyone for the inputs. Appreciate. 🙏😀

you can't register a car on a TM30 adress from a hotel. You need a TM30 registration of a rental accommodation in order to be able to get a certificate of residence from Immigration, in which it is especially noted that you get it issued for registering a car in your name. You cannot register a car in Bangkok if you live on Samui and are registered TM30 in Samui

Nongnuch Kamdee that last part is not true. I've registered 2 new cars bought from Bangkok dealerships in Bangkok within the past year, with a residence certificate from Samui. It's actually quite common as people desire Bangkok plates. You must either go to DLT in Bangkok together with the dealer representative or you must send the dealer your original passport to take to DLT.

You are also incorrect in your other comment that the car cannot be driven out of the province it is bought in. That's the point of the brown log book the dealer gives you with the car, which you return to them when you return the red plates. Also the ferries don't care if you have a red plate car. It doesn't stop you from taking the car on the ferry if needed.
