TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking clarification on obtaining a visa on arrival in Vientiane when traveling by train from Bangkok. The comments suggest that while the visa can be easily obtained online or at the border, there is some ambiguity regarding the exact processing time and logistics of the train travel.

You can do it online or at the border no problems

Esim ...unclear how long it takes. What do you mean "saves a page in passport"?

I have pages but unsure if I can receive in time. I got stuck in Kigali airport waiting on similar for Kenya. Don't need a repeat

you’ll get a visa on arrival quite fast at the border at $ 35-40 USD. Processing time for a e-visa is normally 3 working days.

eSim? You mean eVisa. And what he means is the Laos visa takes a whole page in your passport; you can save a page but getting an eVisa.

Thanks. That's not a problem. The official site for eSim is very unstable and says generally within 3 working days. I arrive on overnight train from Bangkok Friday morning so unsure what to do. I am a woman travelling alone and would prefer not to have to debate with officials

Not sure about train but can read richard barrows Asian Train Guide to find out. But e visa is easy enough just make sure you are on correct page. Saves a page in your passport
