Hello there,

Hello everyone,

I'm visiting Thailand soon and have a question: I hold a Canadian passport and wonder if I should buy my return ticket now for the immigration check at the airport. Do I need a return ticket to obtain my visa on arrival?

Thank you.

TLDR : Answer Summary
As a Canadian passport holder, you will receive a 60-day visa exemption upon entering Thailand. While you are not required to show a return ticket, you may need to present proof of onward travel, which can be an onward bus or train ticket to another country. Some airlines may strictly enforce this rule, thus it is advisable to have an onward ticket when checking in for your flight.

Can you book onward travel within 90 days with the 30 day extension or does it have to be within the 60 days?

I’m confused - you are posting in the DTV group. If you are a DTV holder you certainly don’t need proof of a return ticket

You will likely be denied boarding in Canada if you don’t have proof of onward travel within the time of your visa exemption.

You get a 60 days visa exemption and are formally required to show an onward ticket -not necessarily a return ticket- within the days you’ll get stamped in for. Randomly enforced quite strict by some airline companies.

can I purchase a train or bus ticket to Vietnam or Cambodia instead of flight ticket?

Most airlines will usually accept a bus or train ticket, as long as it clearly shows a destination in another country and that the route crosses the border and goes through immigration on both sides.

they accepted a bus ticket from me , but they did actually request to see it. That was a couple years ago. This year I had a ticket with an airline to Vietnam after my 60 days and was not requested to show it. Luck of the draw, I guess.

Yaowalak Younim if you are travelling with Canadian passport (like Mike is)you won’t be getting ‘visa on arrival’. You will receive a 60 day visa exemption.

Nobody ever requires a return ticket. You may require ‘proof of onward travel’ in order to board your flight
