Hello everyone,

I am an Egyptian passport holder with a Thai Single Entry Tourist Visa (TR).

I will arrive at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) from Egypt, then fly to Vietnam shortly after, and later return to Thailand.

I would like to know:

1. Can I apply for a Re-Entry Permit immediately after arriving at Suvarnabhumi Airport?

2. Is the Re-Entry Permit counter open 24 hours?

3. Can the Re-Entry fee be paid in USD, or do they only accept Thai Baht?

4. If I arrive with only USD, can I clear immigration, exchange money at the airport, and then go to the Re-Entry Permit counter without any issues?

5. What is the best process to make sure I obtain the Re-Entry Permit before my flight to Vietnam?

6. Has any Egyptian passport holder recently done this with a Single Entry Tourist Visa?

Thank you in advance for any advice or recent experiences. 🙏
Answer summary
An Egyptian passport holder with a Thai Single Entry Tourist Visa (TR) inquired about the process and regulations for obtaining a Re-Entry Permit at Suvarnabhumi Airport after arriving from Egypt and before flying to Vietnam. Key points discussed include: 1. A Re-Entry Permit can only be applied for on the way out of Thailand, not upon arrival. 2. The Re-Entry Permit counter is open 24 hours. 3. Fees can only be paid in Thai Baht. 4. If the traveler clears immigration and exchanges money, they will not be able to access the Re-Entry Permit counter without an onward flight ticket. 5. It was emphasized that a Re-Entry Permit does not extend the stay permitted by the original entry stamp. Additional suggestions on checking baggage through to avoid the need for a Re-Entry Permit were also provided.

I would book to Vietnam with Bangkok just as a transit stop. Far simpler than what you are doing. Then your visa is good on your return.

Ralph Tyson Because flying to Vietnam that way was a lot more expensive. Why would I pay a lot more just to transit through Bangkok when there might be a re-entry option? If I’d found out my visa wasn’t eligible for a re-entry permit, I would’ve just done the transit route instead

Can be lots of reasons that they are doing it this way. The one that I can think of is that they wanted to visit both Thailand and Vietnam. The roundtrip ticket to Thailand wasn't all that expensive. A roundtrip ticket from Thailand to Vietnam is not going to be expensive either. So take the first flight of your first ticket to Thailand. Then take the flight from your ticket to Vietnam and enjoy Vietnam and close out that ticket by flying the return trip to Thailand. Then after enjoying Thailand close out that roundtrip by flying back home.

If you’re clearing immigration, and you have a forward ticket to Vietnam for 4 hours later. You can go pay for a re-entry permit on your way out. I wasn’t sure why you would clear immigration, but you need to get your luggage and check it into your next flight. Yes?

Kyle Foster Yes, that’s correct. It’s a self-transfer. Just wanted to double-check that it’s fine with my visa type (TR). Thank you 🙏

Kyle Foster that's because he is not on a ticket that allows him to stay in transit, which he already confirmed

Greg Alexander the ticket is not what allows you to stay in transit - in this case it is because the OP believes he can not check bags all the way through to VN from his point of origin - I suggest he speak to the agent at departure point, explain what he needs and see if they can do it - I have had success.

Thanks. The issue is that it’s a self-transfer booking, so I think I’ll need to collect my baggage and check in again for the next flight

1) No. You can only apply for a re-entry permit at the airport on your way OUT of Thailand. The re-entry desk is PAST security, but BEFORE passport control. So you cannot get to the re-entry desk without a ticket for travel out of Thailand that day.

2) Yes, the desk is open 24 hours. If there isn't anyone there when you go, you ask an immigration officer at the passport control area and they will find someone.

3) Thai baht

4) You can clear immigration and exchange money, but not go to the re-entry desk if you're not leaving Thailand, as mentioned in the answer to #1.

5) Don't forget to get it on the way out.

Just make sure you know that a re-entry permit does not add any time to your permission to stay. So you enter Thailand and receive a 60 day tourist entry stamp that lets you stay in Thailand until 15 September, and then you get a re-entry permit and leave to Vietnam. When you return to Thailand with the re-entry permit, you will receive an entry stamp with the same 15 September date on it. So all of your travel needs to be complete within 60 days of your first arrival in Thailand.

Thank you for your reply. Just to make sure I understood correctly.

I will arrive in Bangkok from Egypt, pass through immigration, collect my luggage, and then I have a flight to Vietnam about 4 hours later from the same airport.

So in my case, can I enter Thailand, collect my luggage, then go through departure procedures and obtain a Re-Entry Permit before my flight to Vietnam, and later use it to return to Thailand on the same Tourist Visa?

I just want to confirm that this is possible and that a Re-Entry Permit is valid for my type of visa (Single Entry Tourist Visa - TR).

Thank you. 🙏

Yes, that's correct.

Are these 2 completely separate ticket bookings, that require you to enter Thailand to checkin for your next flight? What we call a "self-transfer?"

If that's the case then you normally have to do as you say, but if it's a single booking you should be able to just transit without having to go through all of that and using your visa.

Donia El Hosseiny may I suggest that at your checkin leaving Egypt you ask the desk if they can check your bags all the way through? Often they can - show them your ongoing ticket, explain it will ease your way with the Visa - if they can do it you can probably avoid going through immigration etc and not trigger the need for a re-entry. It is worth a shot - I have had success - they systems all talk to each other so as long as you ask nicely they should be able to help you at the start of your trip.

You can't get it before checking in, as I said. You have to cross security to get to the re-entry desk. You need to have already checked in and have your ticket to do that.

Thank you. One more question: should I get the Re-Entry Permit before checking in for my Vietnam flight, or after check-in when I enter the departure area? 🙏

Yes, they are separate bookings (self-transfer). Thank you so much for your help and confirmation. I really appreciate it! 🙏
