Can I enter Thailand as a tourist while waiting for my visa approval?

Apr 19, 2025
3 days ago
Called the NY consulate today and asked for an update on my visa application, since my flight is soon and their processing time is currently around a month. A staff member told me that even if I don't get approved in time, I can go to Thailand as a tourist and once approved, I can leave the country and re-enter with my visa.

Though I suppose immigration could still turn you away when you try to enter.

Just sharing what they said. Don't shoot the messenger cause some of y'all can be jerks lol

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user inquired about the possibility of entering Thailand as a tourist while waiting for their visa approval from the NY consulate. The consulate mentioned that it is possible to travel to Thailand with a tourist visa, and once the visa is approved, individuals can leave and re-enter the country with their new visa. Community members confirmed this practice, noting that entry is typically granted without issue, although there could be circumstances requiring further documentation. It was advised that applicants remain aware of the potential need for interviews or additional documentation that might arise after leaving the country.

Unfortunately NY seems to just wait to the last second to make a final decision on Visas.
Adnan ********
that is correct, you can do it, as long as they dont ask you to appear for interview and you can provide all the additional dox online....

I would ask the staffer to confirm this to you in an email.
James ********
Bottom line is..... you are to stay in the country where you applied for the DTV visa until it's approved or not... period 🩸

@James *******
where is this rule stated?

@Patrick ****
do whatever you want... this SHOW ME is from one in denial. Good Luck πŸ€. You'll need it.

Look at the Thai Embassy or Consulate website... many have that posted on it. ASK the Thai Embassy or Consulate... you will be told to STAY IN THE COUNTRY.

@Patrick ****
This is a general rule for visa everywhere in the world, and a lot of Thai embassies also show it on their website.

Correct βœ…

That's correct information. Has been done a thousand times already. No issue if that's what you want. Immagration won't turn you away when you come in on your DTV for what reason you are legitimate

True that you could enter Visa Exempt. However, the Consulate staffer isn’t thinking clearly enough. What if NY Thai Consulate invited you for interview after you had departed for Thailand?

@Bobby ******
You're right, no consulate will ask for an interview. But the Covid aftermath makes you a f**l.

they don’t call people for interviews at that consulate. You have no idea what you’re talking about boy
Christopher ***********
@Bobby ******
You can guarantee this?
Bobby *******
@Christopher **********
people would have to fly or drive 18 hours to get there. Stop with the scare tactics boy

Not seen a single report of anyone denied entry with the DTV. One or two questioned with certain immigration histories but that is it.

You will be fine.

We also applied to NY and have a flight booked for May 6th. Our back up plan is to fly out to Vietnam and re enter. How long ago did you apply?

oh nice! I leave on the 5Th from JFK. I applied on May 5. She said the current processing time is 10-15 business days so I should be heading back by Friday.

Anonymous participant 🀞. I believe that's the day we applied to. Also flying out of JFK via Etihad.

Thats what I did πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

And they approved it 12 hours after I arrived here πŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

Was still cheaper to leave to Cambodia for 4 days for a vacation and return to enter on DTV than to change my flight πŸ€ͺ🀣
