Hi. When I do a Visa run. I have to leave the country and then return through a place that has a thai embassy or can I just exit the country for a few days than come back to Thailand. I want to use my Visa runs as an advantage to see more of Asia.

TLDR : Answer Summary
You can perform a visa run by either exiting Thailand and returning without needing to visit a Thai embassy, provided you comply with certain conditions. When exiting, you can re-enter by land twice within a calendar year, whereas entry by air does not have a set limit; however, the immigration officer may question your intent to stay. It's advisable to have an onward ticket. A 30-day entry stamp granted at the border can be extended for an additional 30 days at any immigration office. However, staying out of Thailand for a few days is recommended to avoid any suspicions of working illegally.

Jimmy :: you can do both!

Visa run implies getting a new (tourist 60 day) visa at a Thai Embassy abroad .. you can extend this for 30 days at any immigration.

Otherwise

The 30 day- entry stamp you get a the border is a visa exemption and not a visa on its own. You can also extend this for 30 days at any immigration. And yes you can do so twice a calendar year, best to stay out a few days otherwise they suspect you are working because of swift return and might give you some hassle.

I have the feeling you did not extend yet with 30 days at Samui, am I right?

You can exit the country and re enter by land 2 times in a calender year. By air there is no limit its as the discretion of IO to let you in or question you regarding your purpose of visit in Thailand. My advice is to have a return ticket to your home country always with you when you enter by air. Just change the date of return home for that ticket and you will be fine.
