Hypothetical. We have a Workcation DTV and Spouse DTV.

As I understand it the spouse DTV doesn't require the Workcation visa holder to be present when travelling.

If Workcation person doesn't come to Thailand after the current DTV, can the spouse come and go freely for the full 5yrs?
Answer summary
Yes, the spouse of a Workcation DTV holder can travel freely in Thailand for the full 5 years, even if the Workcation holder does not return. The Spouse DTV is a separate multiple entry visa that allows independent travel. However, for extensions inside Thailand beyond 180 days, the main visa holder may need to be present. It's safe to rely on border runs every 180 days, but caution is advised if the Workcation DTV is revoked.

Hypothetically - yes, and this is confirmed now.

Once issued, the spouse DTV is its own 5 year multiple entry visa, not a stamp that is glued to yours.

*Travel:* Spouse can enter, exit, do border bounces completely alone. You do NOT need to be together at the airport, and you do NOT need to enter first each time. That rule is only for initial application - spouse can only apply AFTER main holder is approved. After that, independent.

*Your specific question - if Workcation holder never comes back:*

Technically spouse can keep using their spouse DTV for the full 5 years until it expires, even if workcation person stays outside Thailand. At the border, immigration will stamp the spouse in for 180 days on the spouse's own DTV, they don't check if main holder is in country.

*Where it gets sticky:*

- *Extension inside Thailand for +180 days:* Some offices - Chiang Mai, Bangkok reported - have refused to extend a dependent when main holder was not in country or was not extending at same time. They argue extension of dependent requires extension of main. If you plan to just do border runs every 180 days, not an issue. If you plan to extend inside, main holder should be present.

- *If workcation DTV is revoked/cancelled:* In theory dependent should also be cancelled, but MFA system does not auto-cancel dependent eVisas currently. No one has reported dependent being stopped at border because main was cancelled. Still, if main holder loses DTV for working for Thai company etc, don't rely on spouse DTV being clean.

So for your plan: Workcation person finishes their current stay and doesn't return, spouse wants to keep coming and going for 5 years - that works as long as spouse just does 180 day entries + border runs and does not try to extend inside Thailand alone.

You could consider reading a book or two before your trip. I’d recommend Unlock Thailand by Isla Rey on Amazon, it includes all the info and insights you need. You should check it out. A very good companion
