Hello, my wife and I need to open a bank account and share it (no need for two accounts, LTR visa). Is it possible to open a joint account as a married couple (non-thai)? Or maybe to open an individual account and my wife as a proxy? What from your experience works best and which bank do you recommend for such account?
Answer summary
Yes, married non-Thai couples can open joint bank accounts in Thailand. However, it is important to consider several factors, such as access to online banking, potential implications if one account holder passes away, and the necessity for both partners to meet visa financial requirements. Many expats recommend having separate accounts for visa purposes as banks often limit online access and functionality for joint accounts. Some suggest assigning one partner as the primary holder or using powers of attorney. Popular banks mentioned include Bangkok Bank and Krungsri, but experiences vary.

Banks here are weird in that regard. My wife and I had a joint account at Krungsri but that meant we couldn’t use the app. Weird I know. To renew your visa you’ll need your own account. I don’t see the necessity to have a joint account. You can easily transfer money from one account to the other.

But what would be the advantage of having a joint account in Thailand ? So far I do not understand. I mean, if you have 2 separate accounts it's up to the both account holders to give info to each other about pin code's for debitcard, phone, password, etc. If something happens to one of them, then the other one does not have an immediate financial problem.

In the past, my ex and I were given separate debit cards to the same account at Bangkok Bank. The account was listed in my name with her having access to it. It took a bit of asking and research on their part but they found a way to do it.

So if one of you dies, the other can still use it?

I am not certain that was true. I think so as she was listed as survivor. She may have had to open a new account when I died and transfer the funds. Never got that far. With my current wife I am going to be more careful and be certain about how she can keep what we will have in Thailand. I have to check with immigration to see if her name can be on the account I use to show I have required funds for visa. I will also make her one of the beneficiaries to my retirement funds in the US, my children will get some of that, and this year I will get her listed on my US bank accounts. Sorry, I got a bit off track and answered more than your question.

We have a joint account with Bangkok bank, he is main holder and has app on the mobile, I have the debit card, works for us. We also have a separate account each for our visa needs

I don't think that is really a joint account then, it sounds like his account that you have a card to use. That's what Kasikorn gave me too, but it's not what I wanted.

Hubby and I have a joint account and we are both on nonO retirement. We have to both keep 800K baht (so 1.6m total) but no dramas with immigration over that.

I have a book savings at Krungsri for my visa, and my wife and I have a book savings account for emergency funds.

But it seems impossible to have a joint checking & savings because only 1 of you can do the scanning etc. It is different in the states of course, that is my experience for what it is worth.

Better to open 2 even if one in joint names

In theory it's possible but probably not the best idea as only one of you will get access to the banking app for QR codes, transfers etc.

I tried to open a separate account for this purpose with my wife at Kasikorn. They don't seem to understand the need and I failed, but you might have more success.

This question pops up from time to time, and in theory there both doable. I've never seen a post where they i have they have done it. Check with your bank, probably stear clear of Bangkok bank, but Kbank and others should be able to help. The other thing is check if your immigration office, I think they will want to see twice the funds for your visa extension requirements.

All the banks are different—but if you give her your pin—she can operate on your phone—only 1 phone linked per account and for atm get 2 cards and give her your pin—she can use the 2 nd card or your card

would the signing powers that you mentioned allow my wife to access the account via online / mobile banking and make a transfer?

For the LTR best to have account in your own personal name—just a normal low cost savings account is fine—wife can have signing powers on the account—as she is a dependent under the LTR i would open an account for her too—learnt in Thailand—more is better—never know when she might need it plus on death they freeze your account—how will she get access

Joint accounts in Thailand is possible. In a visa/stay perspective you’ll need to ask your immigration if they accept a joint account to fulfil the financial requirement, and if they do you’ll both has to qualify by proving the requirement x2.

Jan Kenneth Nesland but they already have a LTR so the financial requirements have been met [edit - ok, OP has edited original post]
