Greetings to all. I was just wondering if a bank would enable me to create a bank account or if I would need to wait for my work permit as I currently just have a non-B visa. Please don't laugh at me; I just have a question.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Opening a bank account in Thailand can be challenging without a work permit, though some banks may allow it with just a Non-B visa. Different banks impose varying requirements, and it can depend on the specific branch. Some users reported successfully opening accounts with a residency certificate obtained through local immigration or with letters from their workplaces. Additionally, purchasing bank products like insurance may help in getting an account. It is advised to visit multiple banks to find which one has the most accommodating policies.

Get a letter from where you are staying, stating you reside there. List your name, country, date of birth, passport number
Take this letter & passport and passport sizes photos to your local immigration & request a certificate/ letter of residency to open a bank account, they usually charge 500 baht per letter.
Take this residency letter with your passport to a bank
The residency letter is only valid for 30 days
Go to a main branch usually helps
Bangkok bank & ? Kasikorn are the easiest
SCB usually requires a yellow house book to open an account however some ppl have opened without one
Krungshri usually requires you to have a retirement visa
Bangkok bank will usually ask you to buy a bank product
Accident insurance for 12 months, cheapest option is just under $6,000 baht
I didn’t have to buy it however my friend did also my girlfriend had to buy it to open an account
Don’t expect to get something for nothing. Each office is an independent business. Each office makes their own criteria.
You certainly will pay a fee for transferring USD from USA to Thailand. The amount depends on the bank and the transfer service.
Banking is an essential service if you plan to spend time here. It’s not FREE.
I prepared ahead of time by getting a bank account set up 6 months ago.
I treated this as an important business transaction, not just a casual activity.
My Thai friend made an appointment for me at the Bangkok Bank branch across from Astra in CM. He also translated for me.
I am a middle aged physician and dressed as such. Yes I did do the whole business card ceremony.
I told the banker that I plan to retire soon and buy a condominium at Astra.
I was asked to purchase a life insurance policy for about $100. Presumably the banker gets a commission. Whatever, it’s the price of doing business at the bank.
They wanted to copy my passport and see my credit card from Wells Fargo. I think I showed them how much was in my account also to make the point that I’m a serious customer.
I also showed them $500 in perfect $100 bills that was to be the initial deposit.
Nothing else was required.
Act like a serious customer and you will be treated as such.
Present yourself properly and you should be fine.
If not, thank them for their time and visit another office.
Best wishes on your adventure to Thailand!

We got a letter from our employer (school) and showed the letter and passport and another ID (from your home country) and that was it.. Bangkok bank
Every bank is different when I started looking to open one, some banks wanted a work permit, others didn't but wanted a Non O visa, some wanted my grandkids and the keys to my house. Lol. But seriously it all differs as each branch of a bank makes it own rules.
i gave accurate information. I was polite with your false information as well. Most these banks say new policy and the new farang complain it’s impossible. Nothing new. So laugh away and keep dreaming about this New policy and how right you are.
I haven’t heard it. Are you sure it’s everyone now? The first Bangkok bank told me no because I had a tourist visa. Another one wanted a letter from my embassy plus a long term visa. Third time was a charm. My understand is it’s always been up to the manager of the branch to set policy.
did you get an account with a tourist visa in the last month??? We checked 5 Bangkok Banks all said their lawyers said " no to tourist visa" all said it is a NEW policy
u tried the 5 recommended banks mentioned, I didn't go willy nilly :) Bangkok Bank in Niemann just stopped 2 months ago ,BKB on Changhuak an old standby for tourist visa accts no longer does it, tried all locations in all the malls even tried bigc extra those are the 6 most popular locations that were famous for accounts on tourists visa also tried SCB and several other bank brands.i lived here 100% for 7 years tried to help my daughter. We will put here on a study visa next time she reenters.problem solved. Most folks don't realize how much it costs a bank to keep a bank account open, especially for an American or extra charges. That the American government puts on Thailand banks for American citizens 🙄
obtw A residency Certificate only costs 200 Th.B. At immigration. And to get a bank account you are. Required to have a residency Certificate. But they will not open an account anymore for a short-term 30 day.
Tourist Visa You need a work permit or long stay Visa. This is a new policy just happened this year.
No apology needed, and there is a very slim possibility that a couple of banks still do it, but it's not gonna happen going forward. These banks are dropping like Domino's.obtw this is a new reality unfolding in real time
just contacted an agent she is a sweety. She said she can get the bank account open on a tourist visa in Chiang mai it is just more difficult now. She said krungsri bank. So you are correct about the New policy on all Bangkok banks. I am honestly shocked. I still apoligize.
thanks for the up date! Did she mention which krungsri location ? 🤔 it would be Helpful info for some guys. Also I know a tax lawyer was a master's degree in international tax law He assures me it costs a couple hundred dollars For a bank to open an account for an American. 😞 This is why this new policy does not surprise me period and moving forward, I would be surprised if.
Any of the brands are going to open accounts for short-term visas.

you go up to immigration with a house/condo lease contract. It should be free if have it mailed to you. It’s how to get a Thai driver license on a tourist visa as well.
great info ta! But my contract was not mailed to me, just left in my condo P.O. Box. I’m in Phra Khanong so my immigration office would be where? Thanks Cory. I’m a real newbie.
I would google your immigration office and residency certificate requirements so you get the most accurate information. I did it in Chiang Mai, second floor of immigration building as that is where I live. Had to be there before 12pm. They may only want a copy of your tm30, copy of passport and passport pages. I meant if you want to wait for the residency certificate to be mailed to you it is free but takes 21 days. Next day it is 500 baht. Use an Agent it’s 1000 baht for next day.

It's very difficult to open a bank account without a work permit, and very easy to do so with one. You're better off waiting for your work permit.
oh come on. It all depends upon what bank... time of day... who you talk to. BKK Bank and K bank fine with a simple Non o. So valid work permit simple. Have many that have done with passport visa stamp in it. Might be just a savings account.
