Can a friend extend a visa on arrival in Thailand for medical reasons without visiting the immigration office?

Hi all, I have a question regarding visa extension.

My friend is currently in bkk with a visa on arrival. She’s here for a IVF procedure and the doctors told her the whole process will probably be done by 20th May. Is it possible for her to get an extension without having her to go to the immigration office directly? She has a letter from the hospital stating that she should avoid traveling or moving around too much.

And apart from the documents from the hospital, must she provide any letter from the hotel she’s staying?

Thanks in advance for all the help

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the possibility of extending a visa on arrival for a friend undergoing an IVF procedure in Bangkok. There are differing opinions on whether the friend can extend the visa without directly visiting the immigration office. Some comments suggest that an extension is possible with a hospital letter and a fee, while others emphasize that the individual must apply in person unless they have a power of attorney.

I'd say unless you're the immediate family OR have a signed power of attorney form you're unlikely to be able to get a medica extension of stay for your friend.

They'd have to go to the government complex out at Chaengwattana and apply on their own. (FWIW: there was an old lady wheeled in IN a hospital bed on oxygen last week). So you really have to go in person.

Have the facility that your friend is using call the immigration office and ask what's required and how to apply for a medical extension

Do it BEFORE they end up on overstay because once you're on overstay you cannot get a medical extension..

It does not matter on which kind of stay she is. If she is in the hospital and have a letter from her doctor she is not allowed to travel or moving around, you as friend can bring this letter to the Immigration Office together with 1.900 Thb and her passport and she will get an Extension of Stay based on medical reasons.

You have to ask Immigration Office and take the document with you. Not every doctor is allowed to sign documents to get Extensions of Stay based on medical reasons.

thank you. Do you think I can do it on her behalf? Cos she suffered a miscarriage in her previous procedure so this time the doctor is getting her to not move around much. Only to and from the clinic.

So it is not even a hospital but more like a clinic. You're best option is to visit Chang Wattana Immigration with the letter of the doctor. Good luck.

I think it’s because the hospital don’t have the facilities for inpatient treatment. They’re more like a clinic called Jetanin. I’ll check with the immigration tomorrow. And must it only be the Changwattana office or can I go to the Suan Plu office?

There is NO 30 day Extension on a Visa on Arrival. Please check your advice first before you start to type advice.

The Extension of Stay gets approved directly, but it sounds a little weird to me that some one who is not allowed to move around is an outdoor patient. You have to check this with the Immigration Office, they can order a second opinion on this.

And do you know how long it will take for the extension to get approved? Her current visa expires on the 14th this month.

what if she’s not staying in the hospital but staying in the hotel? Every time she’s done with her checkups/procedure, she will go back to the hotel to rest.

Can just extend for 30 days more on top of the 30 days on arrival stamp at the immigration. Don't really need paperwork from hospital.
