TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, many veterans receive VA disability benefits while living in Thailand. There are several VFWs and American Legion chapters across the country. Veterans should explore the Foreign Medical Program (FMP) if they are not recipients of Tricare. It's also noted that benefits can be deposited directly into a Thai bank without fees, though full deposits must be made. While some clinics will directly bill the VA for services, others require upfront payment with reimbursement.

Yes - you can keep your benifits in your US account or if you can get a thai bank opened you can deposit your benifits directly into a thai bank they convert for you and no fees but you can not split it has to be 100% deposit. VA care is dependant on what you are disabled for some clinics direct bill some you have to pay up front and they reimburse you but will only cover what you are actually raited for - due to the DTA between thailand and the US your VA benifits will not be taxed in thaialnd either and my understanding any state benifits you get as well

It’s raining Bangkok, the food is good, the condo is getting cleaned, one little pothole and whole world goes crazy, you tube works, tictok works, BTS works, coffee is yummy and cheap, you can take a boat to a Michelin star restaurant from my condo, baht trades well, gyms are cheap and great places to meet people, gardening is easy for the 20 after four people, German beer is flowing right now as we get close to October fest,

We have several VFWs and American Legions around Thailand. Yes, there are many veterans living on their VA compensation. Make sure to look into the FMP (foreign medical program) if you’re not a tricare recipient.

If you wanna chat, let me know and I’ll message you.

And if your are a tricare recipient? Is it best to stay with tricare and go on the international plan?

If you're near a large private hospital like Bangkok Hospital in one of the major cities, their international patient office will have experience in helping with tricare/FMP claims. It's quite easy. Best to have a local VFW help you out if you're not familiar with it.

I maintain my Tricare and am seen at Veterans First Pattaya for my VA-related stuff. Applying for FMP is also relatively easy. I have thought about getting AIA in case of an emergency, but I am waiting to make a decision.

I saw recently a condo tour on YouTube with one of the many Bangkok expat social media influencers.

The person showing their condo was a disabled veteran with I believe close to 100%.

If you have a disability and can’t work you should remain in the USA. If you can come to Thailand then you can work in the USA.
