Are South Africans being refused border runs at Myanmar, and can I cross into Laos if denied?

I read a troubling report in the other group(tm) this morning about a South African having trouble doing a border run at Kanchanaburi. Someone else said there are other countries that have also been refused.

Do any of you know about borders with Myanmar refusing to accept South Africans and perhaps some other nationalities. Apparently from somewhere early this year.

Also, if I am denied a border run at Mae Sai, can I ride to Chiang Khong and cross over into Laos to do the same? I have never had to think beyond a border run at Mae Sai.

TLDR : Answer Summary
There are concerns among South African nationals regarding border run issues at Kanchanaburi, with reports of refusals. It has been suggested that South Africans may be on Thai immigration watch lists, affecting their ability to cross into Myanmar. Other borders, particularly with Laos, seem to be less problematic for entry. If denied at Mae Sai, crossing into Laos from Chiang Khong is generally acceptable. Visa acquisition for South Africans can vary by location, with some Thai embassies in neighboring countries issuing visas while others do not.

South African are a bit on Thai Immigration watch list and your own government add to some problems. In principle SA if the only country from the African Continent that enjoys the same privileges than a Western passport. Mean you can enter by Air for 30days visa waiver, you can do border bounce in one calender year TWICE and you can apply for Visa in some countries. Now comes the tricky part, some places don't accept South African passport. I do not know why. For border bounce you have to check with the companies in that area, they would know best. I can tell from Bangkok you can go Cambodian border without problem (just avoid POI PET). Kanchanaburi border will not stamp SA, however I can not speak for Mae Sai. All border with Laos are OK. Coming to next part: Visa application: Thai Embassy and Consulate in Laos can issue Visa to SA and in Malaysia at Kota Bharu. Other places in Vietnam, Malaysia (Penang/KL) and Yangon do not issue Visa for SA. Last point the SA Embassy, take ages to get new passport or get documents certified. Very last point: if SA apply for an informal ED Visa you will have to show Police Clearance report and must have a valid story of why you wish to study Thai. Best would be to sign up at a real University to get real Study paper.

Chiang Khong are tough on visa runner, Mae Sai is very easy.

I think things went south for South Africans after the post apartheid "honeymoon celebration" period ended. A number of countries that relaxed visa restrictions for SA passport holders tightened up again.

I wouldn't read too much into it regarding nationality seeing how many thousands of visitors from each country visit thailand. Just because a couple of South Africans had trouble doesnt mean they are being targeted. People have a habit of not sharing the full history when being denied.

Ivor is 100 percent right.

I think you get denied to go out without avisa for Myanmar because they're not taking you back. If they're not takng you back and you just have a 12h visa you'll be stranded on the bridge... In theory. The same idea as being denied boarding ifyou dont have a visa for your destination, at the airport.

. I think you mean denied entry to Myanmar, not exit from Thailand, although they happen at same time. I've never heard of a country denying exit to a foreigner without a reason such as an arrest warrant. But I know what you mean.

at Mae Sai you can be denied "exit". They won't let you out on a day pass to Tachileck if they're not going to let you back in. For example, if you have done two land crossings and try a third, as far as I heard, they won't give you the day visa into Myanmar because when you have to come back they wont accept you. They eill instead tell you to go somewhere else asap.

That is my understanding anyway.

What do you mean denied before leaving? You have to be outside Thailand to be denied entry.

Agreed. If I get denied I will be denied before leaving which I guess will mean I need to hastily book a flight to MY or something like that. Thanks again. This group is great..
