Will immigration grant me a 30-day extension after a land border run if I have had two consecutive visa exempt entries?

I entered Thailand on a 30 day visa exemption at the beginning of March. I decided to apply for an Ed visa and was going to get a 30 day extension at immigration to allow time for the Ed visa process. But after receiving the letter from the MOE you have to go to immigration with at least 15 days left on your visa exemption, and for me that would probably fall on Songkran and once immigration reopens I wouldn’t have 15 days remaining. The school suggested I do a land border run at the beginning of April to get a new 30 day visa exemption, then start the Ed visa application, then get a 30 day extension at immigration until my Ed visa is granted. I’m not so worried about the land border run because it would be my first one ever. My question is whether immigration will give me a 30 day extension if they see two consecutive visa exempt entries. My only other entry was in September 2023 on a 60 day tourist visa which I extended once, then I left the country for 3 months to travel Vietnam. How likely am I to be denied the extension after doing a land border run for a second visa exemption?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The individual entered Thailand on a 30-day visa exemption and plans to apply for an Ed visa. Due to timing issues with the Songkran holiday, they consider doing a land border run to obtain another 30-day visa exemption. Questions arise regarding the likelihood of being granted a 30-day extension at immigration after two consecutive visa exempt entries. Responses indicate that as long as the requirements are met, obtaining the extension should not be problematic, despite concerns about entry history.

Not so likely to be rejected. Your total stay on tourism-purposed entries is not excessive.

Why not get the 30 day extension now and also apply for the ED visa at the same time with paperwork from your school?

I entered on March 5. It can take up to 4 weeks to get the approval letter from MOE, then once you get it you have to go to immigration with at least 15 days left on your visa or visa exemption. So say I apply now and at the beginning of April when my current entry expires, I get another 30 day extension. The problem is that immigration is closed during Songkran and also a couple days the preceding week. If I didn’t get my MOE letter until right before that, I wouldn’t be able to get the conversion while having at least 15 days left on my visa exemption. I would have to wait for immigration to reopen and by that point I would have less than 15 days remaining. I couldn’t do a border run at that point because you have to restart the Ed visa application if you leave. So it’s best to start it right after entering so that you can get an extension and that 60 day window provides ample time. If it weren’t for Songkran I would be fine but the school felt it was risky.

so what date did the paperwork go to the MOE? Even if it was today you sneak in before songkran I believe unless I'm not working the days correctly

I went to the school yesterday and their advice was to wait, so I did not apply. They are saying it has been taking 4-5 weeks lately. If it were 4 weeks it would have fallen on the 10th which is a Wednesday and I’d be safe. But if it took even a couple days longer I’d have a problem because the 12th is the last possible day I could go to immigration for the conversion.

OK, it's you that said 4 weeks, I have no idea how long it takes. I guess if you're worried do a border bounce but use a reputable border bounce company and you won't have a problem

thanks, that’s the answer I was hoping for. And I guess getting the 30 day extension after the border bounce won’t be an issue?

you won't have any issue getting an extension, every visa exempt entry is entitled to a 30 day extension

If you're going to have any problems it's going to be when you're entering the country. Getting a 30 day extension is just a formality. You meet the requirements you get the extension.

thanks - it’s my first border run ever, so I’m hoping it won’t be a big deal.
