Clear simple answer pls.

My husband and I are coming on Canadian passport. We have return tickets they are less than 89 days apart.

As we will get 60 when we arrive and need to extend for 30, will having a return ticket upon arrival for after the 60 days I’ll be getting at the point be an issue?

Do I need to buy I dummy ticket to get in? Or will they be okay with the fact we are going for extensions? We have air BNB booked for the first 60 days too and will have final 30 booked before renewal.

Flying with Cathay from Vancouver, stop in Hong Kong and arriving in Bkk.

Do I need a 60 day exit ticket even though I will be legally staying for 90 including the extension? (Also this will be my first entrance 2026.l, but was in Phuket summer 2025 for less than 30 days.. so no issues there).

If I do, should it be an Air ticket? I have hear them being picky about ground.

TIA
Answer summary
A Canadian couple traveling to Thailand with a return ticket less than 89 days apart are concerned about immigration rules and the requirement for proof of onward travel. They have an Airbnb booked for the first 60 days and plan to extend their stay for an additional 30 days. Community responses suggest that as long as they have a return ticket within 90 days (60 days plus 30-day extension), they should not face issues upon arrival. However, it is recommended to check with the airline about their policies regarding ticket proof, as airlines are responsible for ensuring travelers meet entry requirements.

Are you over 50? Get a 90 day non-o retirement visa all online from Canada. It's so easy to get from your nearest Thai embassy, but it's done online.

To answer your question, you'll be fine, get the air ticket for 90 days and do the extension. You could also do a side trip to Vietnam or someplace in SE Asia and you'll get another 60 upon return. You can do this up to 2x per calendar year and much more fun. Thai immigration offices are a nightmare.

Canadian here

25 winters in thai .

I ALWAYS have a dummy ticket out within first 60 days ....many gamble ,many make it ,some don't. I have seen people denied at boarding ,I have being asked .

Is itvworth the 100 bucks to you to gamble ?

The rule rule is quite clear .

There will be many who answer I did it ,I got away with it ...bla bla .

The rule is clear

The airlines follow the regs for each country they fly to under IATA guidlines. They are held financially accountable to return you at their expense if they ignore issued regs. If the exempt entry gets backed down to 30 days i think you will see more airlines checking onward travel and denying boarding at thai's direction

If I read your post correctly

If you have a return ticket within the 60+ 30 (90 day) you are fine

We do this every year. Currently it is still 60 days on arrival but they are talking of changing it back. If they ask we jus say we are getting a 30 day extension

As long as you have a return ticket and it’s within the 90 days your fine

Not necessarily, many airlines will refuse to check you in when you don’t have an onward ticket within 50 days as they are financially responsible in case thailand refuse you entry for not having a ticket.

Better ask Cathay beforehand if they allow checkin without a ticket.

Melissa Batch Then your airline has already got the money for a seat home, were you to be refused entry. You should be fine.

You need to hope they dont change the 60 days to 30 before you arrive which they are talking about doing but if goes ahead unlikely to do before your arrival don't forget fill out your TDAC form online within 72 hours of arrival in bkk . Personally id sort i fake return ticket within the 60 days as on form asks return flight details and immigration ask how long your staying just a ticket you can after cancel to avoid any issues or apply for visa. Before you fly

No, I just did this, and I’ve done it several times, once with no return flight booked, you’re going to be fine.

The airline (at check-in Canada) is the entity that would/could request proof of onward travel/return ticket. I have travelled to Thailand more than 20 times. Only once was I asked to show proof of onward travel. The ticket was for 4 months in the future. They were not concerned about the dates. They were concerned only about proof of onward travel.

Thai immigration is not concerned about that. They have other concerns.

You will be just fine. Go with what you have, be respectful, dress appropriately, don’t give information voluntarily, don’t give more information than required and you will be fine.

John N Kwan I flew HKG to BKK and Dragon Air wouldn't let me check-in without seeing an onward ticket within 30 days.

You'll need to ask Cathay, immigration won't care, it's the airline. Worst case scenario purchase an onward ticket, or sign the airline preboarding standard disclaimer should you be refused entry.
