TLDR : Answer Summary
Buying a second-hand Volvo in Thailand is generally not recommended due to the high cost of parts and limited availability. Many comments suggest sticking to brands like Toyota or Honda, which are perceived as more reliable and easier to maintain due to better parts availability and lower repair costs. There are concerns about the quality and expense of Volvo's parts, which are described as expensive everywhere, and a lack of local dealerships, making repairs challenging. Overall, the consensus indicates it's wiser for expats to consider locally manufactured cars for better service and support.

It is probably so. Reason is that there are only little Volvos on the roads. And I can imagine there are only original parts available. For all the standard models from Isuzu, Ford/Mazda, toyota, Mizubishi you get very good quality and cheap spare parts. Many made in Thailand but also made in Japan.

You get 2'nd hand European cars (except MB, Porsche and BMW) at a fraction of the new price - but, as you said above, spareparts and getting them repaired is pretty expensive.

It depends on you... I see lots of older 70´s and 80´s models of Volvo’s kicking around. But I believe that parts would be hard to come by. I would agree with the older toyota, Honda and even some Mazda being a good buy. Older vehicles are however expensive, but there is no rust. I paid 160k baht for a 1 owner 2003 Toyota Corolla Altis fully loaded with the sport mode button 4 years ago. It has 300k kms on it and runs great 👍🏻 with no oil top up between service. I’ve spent 35k in maintenance of parts and repairs in that time. Air con system 20k, new door locks, rear wheel bearing hubs and a new radiator. Oh and new tires last year.

No problem. I do see the old Volvo’s and do a bit of drooling. The old station wagons are amazing for travelling as the back seat flops down making it for convenient sleeping if you build some screens for the windows. You would however need to be handy and know a bit about cars to keep it rolling. I also believe that there are several Thai Volvo fan clubs if you could find them where you could access parts, vehicles and knowledge. Good luck 😉

Stick to Toyota all day long. Avoid Nissan, now Renault owns Nissan they are designed to get to the end of the warranty, then fall apart in front of your eyes.

How did this go from visa advice to car advice?

Maybe so...but also a lot of expats in here who would gladly share advice without trying to scam the OP out of some baht.

as long as I’ve been here a pretty dumb place to start for car advice, would also explain why it’s the first I’ve seen 🤷‍♂️

Would never buy a second hand car or bike in Thailand unless you know the seller

Luxury cars brands are rediculously over priced in Thailand. On the flip side, it will hold it's value longer for resell. Compare toyota to Mercedes or volvo and see the crazy price difference on an old car. These are cars posted from dealers with non inflated prices..maybe 5% wiggle room?

Shea *******
But yes buying from a manufacturer with in thailand would be cheapest for parts.

it's because this is an imature car market and there isn't a great surplus, also as long as it drives someone will take it. A larger car market is still a relatively new thing and most buying and selling is still done through car dealers.

Even the way the transferring of cars and looking up the history of cars here is behind other countries with little of it being automated.

That website is a small one just starting, the biggest one in Thailand is one2car.com

thanks I’m looking for a cheap cheap car. Under 100k that’s why I’m curious of part prices.

The Uk is so cheap for cars! Thailand is crazy expensive with all the import taxes, but they do Hold their value here 🙂 not that I would sell I’ll keep until it dies 🙂
Paul *******
Geeky holdings are majority share holders from China since 2010 Toyota I would co for
Niclas ***********
Honda and Toyota is the best bet. Second hand market is way overpriced so unless you find a bargain normally from expat it might be worthwhile to buy new if you have the means.
Bob *******
I am told second hand cars are expensive in Thailand if buying second hand better buying off someone you can trust

Yeah, to get the parts is the main problem, and also the very limited dealership. All what is locally build even MG would be a better choice.
Jeff *******
@Karsten *******
as said I've not seen good ones in TH. Literally parts falling off in interior. Newer ones may be better, but still ugly.
Karsten ********
@Jeff ******
yes produced in Rayong and not available at this time.
Karsten ********
U can buy a benz assembled in Thailand, or bmw or whatever... Is only the batch on the hood, MG is new and improve all the time.

So you bought what? A mazda?
Karsten ********
Thr MG ZS EV also has a very good review in the german car club adac.
Jeff *******
@Karsten *******
you were saying you had to wait for Mazda parts.
Karsten ********
New bt50 share platform with isuzu.

@Jeff ******
the bt50 share platform with ford ranger for maybe 20 years and build locally. MG build in Chonburi. So?

A Chinese MG.. no thanks

Ps mazda manufactures in Thailand now...

@Karsten *******
I think whomever buys an MG will need more luck.
Karsten ********
@Jeff ******
good luck

@Karsten *******
mine is 2020, if it breaks and we are dissatisfied with service we have a buy back clause. We almost sold it back to them when they screwed up some body work.

So if we have a problem, we can bail and get our down payment back.
Karsten ********
@Jeff ******
I have a 2013 Mazda bt50 3.2 4wd,had to wait for a drive shaft 2 weeks....
Jeff *******
@Karsten *******
i know a lot of ppl who bought MGs because they got a discount.

they're great cars if you don't mind little plastic bits of interior randomly falling off.

i drive a Mazda 3, and a 2008 Toyota Avanza...

i've yet to be passed on the motorway by an MG... even in the Avanza. feels like a rocket aint' always a rocket.

that said maybe they've gotten better by now, no one i know has a 2020 or newer. but they're still uglier than the ass end of a baboon.
Karsten ********
@Jeff ******
my friend got the hybrid, great car... He has solar panels on the roof of his garage, he drive probably for free in the city, and both engines on the motorway makes it feel like a rocket.
Jeff *******
@Karsten *******
walking everywhere is a better choice than MG
Zabel ******************
Yes all imported car's cost way more and that also count for the parts
John ****
Parts would be hard to get. Repair would be a challenge. China does have a large Volvo market
