This topic just came up with my wife & I. In the US I would never buy a new car due to the huge depreciation as soon as you drive it off the lot. Now again this is the US. My Thai wife swears by not ever buying a used car in Thailand. I just cannot fathom spending so much more on a new car (even higher than US prices for same car) just to drive it back & forth around town. Thoughts?

I asked a question, your response is not an answer. Your initial comment on not being able to rely on basic honesty in this country is the reason I asked a question. If you are Thai or not, assuming all Thais lack basic honesty is a questionable view to have. Be prepared for more people to ask questions. Racism is the same whether it comes from ferang or native Thai. It is wrong and deserves to be challenged or have a light shined on it so all can see and learn right from wrong. I just took ownership of a lovely used motorcycle without experiencing a lack of basic honesty. All I experienced was friends eager to help a foreign person to start to build their new life in Thailand. Everyone sabai sabai, although very different to how vehicles change ownership invthe UK. Some misunderstandings and a need to have support from a Thai friend for translating and interpreting, however I see no dishonesty from the Thai people around me here. Maybe you have had one or more bad experiences, but remember that assuming makes an ass out of you and me, my friend. Have a nice day.

Yes, you will know if it's an insurance case. Not hard to withdraw case files on a damage car here in Thailand. Just that no one have gathered it all like back home (carverteco or what's the name?) doesn't mean they don't exist. Most insurance case cars that get damaged goes to auction, It's either written off fully as a parts car and can never drive on the road again or as a lightly damaged car. Flooded ones get deregistered and cannot be registered again. So "you never know is just bullshit".
I would be more worried about the condition of the engine than the actual structure, but that cost about 15-20k at top to fix. But if you like loosing 600k in a second, go with a new one 😉

There is no car vertical in Thailand and there is no way of checking a vehicle's history when it is suspected to have been involved in an accident. The only type of history you can get from a vehicle is the service history if it's been serviced by a main dealer from new.

The part you've neglected to mention is the numerous accidents that never make it to insurance because they are negotiated on the street, neither party had insurance, etc. There is literally no record of those. They could be minor, if you're lucky, or they could be major. It's impossible to know, and with Thai roads being what they are (stats are public - not my words here), it's more likely than not that a second hand car has been through something.

every car have a VIN every VIN is registered if it was a major accident police gets involved and you can claim such an accident with the cars VIN. If just a small one then it's only the insurance. The insurance company is obligated to file every accident small or big with photos etc which is connected to the VIN. If something major happens and insurance writes the car off it will be deleted and the book to the car as well. Why i know this is cause my brother in law used to work for bangkok insurance being the one that drive out to the accident and file the cases.
In the west there are companies like Car Vertical that collect that data into a simple app. Yes it would be great to have such here as well.

no there is not, i have full history of the one that i own. Everytime it gets with insurance gets written down. If its a major accident you can withdraw the case files from the police etc. If its traded of with auctions you can see that in the book.
