TLDR : Answer Summary
The 90-day validity of the Non-O visa begins on the day you arrive in Thailand. Comments confirm that upon arrival, you will receive a stamp in your passport for 90 days, counting from that day. It’s recommended to check the entry stamp for the correct dates, and some commenters advised preparing for potential questions about return tickets at check-in.

Hey Martin, I think you have your answer now, it starts when you arrive. But double check the stamp in your passport is for 90 days. When I came through the immigration officer incorrectly stamped my passport. I had to wait while he altered the date in my passport by hand.
Denny Moore I didn’t have to send my passport. I did it on the Internet with my friend who helped me. You just have to take a photo of your passport picture page and that was it and it only took one week for it to come through from London embassy uk
No your 3 months doesn't start till you get to Thailand I've just came back from Thailand it's an amazing country but not as cheap as people say enjoy it
Fill out your TDAC 3 days before you arrive then scan the qr code (sent to you by email) at immigration and you’re straight through no questions. And no you don’t need a return ticket.
They stamp with an entry and exit date make sure you carry about 8 passport sized photos with you (doctors hospital dentist immigration ) international driving license for Thailand available at the post office
Yes, the 90 days starts from when you enter Thailand. If you are intending extending your Non-O visa to a marriage or retirement extension you need to obtain a Thai telephone number, open a Thai bank account as soon as possible and deposit the required funds into it.
For the first time I was asked for my return ticket when checking in at Heathrow three weeks ago. The checkin agent said I had to have one. I said I didn’t as I had a visa (Non-immigrant O for retirement).
Another agent was consulted and said no return needed with a visa. The first agent then asked for the visa. The dates on the visa are for the entry period the visa covers. These of course differ from the 90 days you get with the stamp in your passport you get when entering Thailand. So my comment that I was not returning generated a further discussion. I convinced her my view was correct. All was well.
Just describing my experience; it might happen to you so allow a bit more time to checkin to keep stress low😃
The airline was Oman Air. I am “older” and was in business class.
It was the first time I have been asked about a return ticket and I have flown to Thailand, and many other places, over the years. I do not blame the airline as they have to return you and are fined heavily too if you are refused entry.
Possibly the tightening and resultant confusion of Thailand’s immigration policy may have made airlines more careful?
Brian Hudson Yes. My flight from London was early morning and the breakfast was possibly the best I have had on an aeroplane. The business lounge in Muscat is excellent. Seats and service on board were all good. Not as good as Qatar, better than Ethihad.
If you come to a stand off and are getting refused step back, go online to trip.com and book any old return flight and cancel it after arrival in Thailand. Etihad are best for refunds, in fact I'd recommend Etihad for most things.
Dave Owen The problem with this advice is that fully refundable tickets are very expensive. On a cheaper refundable ticket you may face large “fees” for cancelling.
It also depends whether you are expected to buy a return or a ticket out of Thailand. The latter can be quite cheap even if non-refundable.
Martin HurlstonNo problem as you have a visa. However, visa and entry rules are complex and the checkin staff will not fully understand. Just allow a bit more time if they do query it. It will not be a problem.
My guess is that they will not ask. But be prepared.
