TLDR : Answer Summary
Your friend needs to have the 800,000 THB in a Thai bank account for at least two months before applying for a one-year extension of stay based on retirement with the O-A visa. Additionally, by using the Non-OA visa correctly, and assuming the borders reopen, he may extend his stay for nearly two years by exiting and re-entering Thailand.

He will need the 800K THB, seasoned in a Thai bank for two months, before he applies for the one year extension of stay based on retirement.

IF the Non-OA visa is used correctly, AND the borders reopen, he can stay for about two years by border bouncing OUT of Thailand close to the final date on the visa. He'll be stamped in for another year then.

"IF the Non-OA visa is used correctly, AND the borders reopen, he can stay for about two years by border bouncing OUT of Thailand close to the final date on the visa. He'll be stamped in for another year then" . . . .and this means, during this time he does NOT need any money in a Thai bank . . (Bob D'Andrea seems to confuse visa with extension) . . . . .he only needs the 800,000 THB seasoned for two months, if he wants to switch from the visa & admitted stay, to a 1-year Extension of Stay Permit

That is correct. The visa is a multiple entry visa, that's good for a year, and on each entry a person is stamped for one year (from the date of entry). The immigration officers at the border *MAY* want to see health insurance, and may stamp a person up to the valid date of the health insurance. However, NO proof of finances are required.

and for that renewal he'll need the money thanks

He will need insurance as long as he is in Thailand on Non-OA entry, or 1 year extension from that entry.

He needs to buy insurance from approved Thail companies for 1 year extension.

To get a one year extension of stay, he will need the 800K THB seasoned in a Thai bank account for 2 months before applying for the extension of stay. He will also need to keep it THREE months after the extension of stay is granted. He can not allow the seasoned money to go below 400K THB at any time.

Benjamin Hays. He'll also need to buy insurance for the second year.
