How often can you apply for a tourist visa? It's good for 6 months but after it expires can you apply for another one?

Hey Dean you are wise to look at visa options. My brother’s situation is EXACTLY like yours. Except he is retired. On what was his 3rd entry into Thailand for 2025 on December 28th 2025 he was interrogated entering visa exempt. He was let in but told he would need a visa to enter Thailand. I have been going to Thailand for 30 years and never heard anything like this.

Just get a tourist visa and you can go as many times a year as you like.

If you want to stay more than the 60 day tourist visa allows just get a 30 day extension.

Get a tourist visa 60 days ( if they dont change it to 30 !) And extrudé it at immigration another 30 days. You can do that twicr a year no problem. Does uour girlfriend work ? If not, you could meet up in Siem Reap cambodia or Saigon for a few weeks. Buy her a passport .

Sean Knowles yes. They are considering 30 days instead of 60 visa exempt. Tourist Visa is still 60 days .

They will not change a tourist visa. It has been 60 days for over 20 years.

They are thinking of changing the visa exempt from 60 days back to 30 but they are not the same thing.

You can also enter on tourist visa as many times as you want per year especially if you are not getting extensions.

I am the same as you but do 3 x 45 days each year on visa exempt, fly back to UK in-between. Never had a problem with immigration l

I think you need to keep under 150 days a calendar year.

Number 1 there are no new rules. You can arrive-visa exempt but they may give you a small warning . It’s very much up to the immigration officer at the time. You may want to think about a proper visa of one sort or another next time if they do give you a lecture. Personally they have been great to me, I have been asked purpose of visit etc. I left in march to Singapore as my flights through Qatar were cancelled and when I came back explaining I did not want an overstay they gave me another 60 days and I too am a regular visitor with a girlfriend here.

I’ve got the same problem, I’m going for a retirement visa, the 90 day reporting resets when you leave/enter Thailand.

Should be no issues using visa exempts as you're out of the Kingdom several months at a time.

Since you visit your girlfriend and probably live with you, a tourist reason is no longer accepted. So a visa with the reason, visiting friends and family, with Invitation letter and what all goes with it. I was strictly checked in January, return trip, money, etc. Next time the right visa, I would warn before I was allowed to enter.

This is just not true.

He can get a tourist visa to stay with anyone he wants for up to 60 days and extend it as many times a year as he wants.

Gethin Evans things have changed. My brothers story mirrors Dean’s exactly except my brother is retired. He stays Les then two months. On third entry of 2025 immigration officer told him he would need a visa next time. I have not seen that in print anywhere.

"To stay with Thai family residing in Thailand (more than 60 days)" is the selection on the eVisa system. No mention of friends on the application or on the issued visa.

They will likely give you a warning at the airport when they decide your staying to often for a month plus. Ive been coming twice a year for 3 months at a tine including extensions. They told me on entry this jan ive done visa exemt to often so next time get the propper visa . Me and my partner are solid after 3 years so we got married this month, they gave me a month extension based on awaiting marraige documents to give me time to apply for my non o marraige visa. No worries after that.

If you plan to keep doing what you are doing be sure you get a “multi entrance” Visa for sure, whichever one you decide on

that would work but timing the application is important to make use of the validity period. If staying in Thailand 3 SETV might be better and it’s also less expensive.

I have just applied for a METV to go for three months with a couple of trips for 2-3 weeks outside Thailand. I haven’t yet booked the additional trips (one by bus to Laos and the second flying to Vietnam as things are still uncertain if Qatari airspace will have reopened by end of April) so I’m a little concerned they will issue a SETV instead but I’ll need to wait and see.

If you're over 50 then one of the retirement visa options is probably the most suitable for you. The most common is a 90 day Non-O visa followed by a 12 month extension of stay but in your case it might not be best for you. I'd suggest looking at the Non-OA visa which is a 12 month visa which includes multiple entries so you can come and go as you please while it remains valid, it does need insurance, police check etc though

Like everyone said already, you will be stopped at immigration soon and they will say next time you have to have a visa. They did it to me and couple of colleagues that do same i do. Work in europe and come for holiday many times every year.

We never stay more than 14 days though each time. Still we have to have a visa now. New rules.

If you’re over 50 get a retirement visa. As long as you’re not working in Thailand, you don’t actually have to be retired.

3 times a year for 2 months each is too much. You will be stopped.

You need a long term visa such as DTV or an elite visa (now has a different name).

This is completely incorrect. If you get a tourist visa you can go as many times as you like in a year.

The only thing they have changed is extensions.

As this person is unlikely to get an extension on a tourist visa unless he stays more than 60 days he will never have a problem.

Gethin Evans again you keep saying “completely incorrect”. When several others have said immigration told them they would not be allowed entry under Visa exempt. I have been a frequent visitor to Thailand for 30 years. I would have totally agreed with you. But my brother was told that on his 3rd entry in 2025. He never stayed more than 60 days. It may not be printed anywhere ( I have not been able to find it). Immigration officers are telling people that and noting it. My brother (American) flys business class and stays in 5 star hotels.

Gethin Evans not if they change it back to 30 days on arrival like they're talking about because you're right, it's the extentions they don't like.

Gethin Evans If you say so. It’s always at the discretion of the immigration officer. I have been told a tourist visa is no suitable, by an immigration officer. So no, I don’t think you can go as many times as you like.
