Looking for some Visa advise

New to the group

Decided to retire in Thailand!

Will land in October!

I am 55 and my husband is 45

I was told he can apply as a dependent with me for retirement visa!

But a bit confused on what Visa we should apply for before leaving since I think I don’t have enough time to show the proper income in savings before I get there from the states.

I have a non-negotiable pension that cannot be taken away but it looks like I can’t use that and need the savings account for up to 12 weeks but I’m 13 weeks away from leaving and haven’t deposited the money yet from investments

Should I apply for the 90 day tourist Visa and once I’m there put my money in a Thai bank account then apply for retirement visa??

Thank you in advance 🇹🇭✌🏼
Summary so far
A user is seeking advice on visa options to retire in Thailand. They plan to arrive in October but are concerned about meeting savings requirements for a retirement visa. The community discusses whether she should apply for a 90-day tourist visa or the correct retirement visa, mentioning that a tourist visa may not allow the opening of a Thai bank account, which is necessary for proof of funds. They also clarify the income and savings amounts required, as well as the implications for her husband's dependent visa application. The user seeks guidance on managing these requirements before their move.

Good luck to you, I have found out that what works for one person may not work for another. I have run into a few snags along the way. Best of luck

Every immigration office has different requirements so contact an agency in the city you’re going to 🙏
Tim ********

You can apply for a visa after you arrive and the agency knows the bank, immigration and DOT employees by name and don’t have to wait in line (my experience)

Tim Cooley only if you are willing to fork out up from 60,000 THB for the agent to get around the existing rules. (because since February 2025, you can't get a bank account opened anymore on a touristic entry). Myself I have already been quoted 80,000 THB for such a service (bank account, Non-O visa and 12-months extension)

Tim Cooley Immigration has NOTHING to do with applying for a visa

Hey! Where are you applying from? We just showed an account balance, it didn't have to season for 3 months but I'm not sure every office is the same. You'll have to get the non-oa and health insurance and FBI background check and I think he'll need to show about $1000 USD, I can't remember the amount.

When you say FBI background check is that the same a criminal record check in Canada?

Sharon McBeath It's a federal background check. I would check with your consulate and see what they are willing to accept.

FYI, I showed a balance on my fidelity account, which is a brokerage account. No issues. I applied through the Los Angeles office.

If you come on a tourist visa you won't be able to open a Thai bank account. Get the visa before you come, as long as you can show either 3 months of income of 65k baht or more each month or savings of more than 800k baht you should be able to apply for a visa based on being over 50. But if you apply for the 90 day Non-O visa your husband won't be able to get a Non-O based on being your dependant, he may be able to get it if you apply for the Non-OA visa which requires insurance, medical certificate and police checks. You'll need to check with the consulate you will apply through to see if it's possible.

John you can show the 65k baht a month as an American, instead of the 800k baht, for the non o visa?

@Brenda ********
yes when you apply at a Thai consulate for the 90 day Non-O visa but when you come to Thailand you will need to open a Thai bank account and put a minimum of 800k baht in it for 2 months before you can apply for the 12 months extension of stay. It must remain in the account for 3 months after you get the extension and can't drop below 400k baht at any point for the duration of the extension

Does the $65k bhat have to be in a bank account or can it be in investments?

Sharon McBeath it is 800,000 Baht ($25,000 USD) that have to be in a bank account, not 65,000 Baht.

Just delay your trip so your saving reach the required age. You need to follow the rules to have a smooth sailing.

Not really. You can't get a bank account on a tourist entry and you will need a Thai bank account for the 1 yr extension of the 90 day visa. Best to get the O visa before entering Thailand. With the O visa you should be able to open a bank account.
