I'd like to give an update on my situation that many of you had known about before.
I was the guy who made a lengthy post about my lost passport, my new 1-year emergency passport, need to renew my visa-exampt status, a genuine desire to get a proper passport and visa after returning, and my dog waiting for me in Thailand all the while.
I am an American citizen. I have spent 2 separate 3-month stints in Thailand over the last 12 months and I took the risk of leaving Thailand to then come back and try to enter one more time on a visa-exampt atatus. Here are the details....
Many commentors on my original post told me before that the 1-year temporary passport is designed only to get me back to my home country of the USA. The US Embassy in Bangkok told me otherwise. ChatGPT told me otherwise. The Immigration Officers at various offices, including the one at CNX even told me otherwise. At the recommendation of ChatGPT, I went to Malaysia for a few days. Getting on board the plane in Chiang Mai raised some eyebrows, but nothing major. Entering in Malaysia was slightly more troublesome. Leaving Malaysia was an absolute nightmare. I got to the airport in KL nearly 3 hours before my flight time because that is basically when the checkin gates open. I talked to one of the AirAsia girls at the counter. She was very nice. She asked me to wait a while as she needed to check with her manager and then with Thai Immigration about the situation. I waited for a long time. She then came to me and told me her shift was ending and she passed off the case to her coworker. I knew right then this wasn't good. She told me to go back to see that second girl about 20 minutes later. By the time I went back to see the second girl, my flight is maybe just over an hour from departure time. Fortunately the first girl told me that if this whole ordeal caused me to miss my flight, then AirAsia would put me on another flight for free, which eased my mind greatly.
But then I went to see the second girl.....
The second girl basically told me the following things, all of which were either false or simply not disclosed to me beforehand....
A) You need to get a return or onward travel ticket out of Thailand before we let you board.
B) No, in fact my coworker definitely did not tell you that AirAsia would put you on a second flight (due to no fault of your own) if you miss this one you've already purchased.
C) Thailand Immigration and my coworker already told you before that you needed an onward travel ticket.
I panicked and had my dad on the phone to help me get a proper ticket that satisfied this girl's criteria. (Thanks very much, Dad!) I sprinted, skipped all the lines at the checkin girl's order to do so, and I barely made it to the flight. When I landed in Chiang Mai, they asked me to explain my entire story in detail. I told them everything 100% honestly, which is that I want to immediately get a new passport and then get a DTV and stay in Thailand for a longer time. I was nervous about how they'd respond to that, but I am not fond of telling lies (one of the Ten Comamndments ✝️). They stamped me and let me go.
In conclusion, the Temporary Passport does in fact work for international travel to other countries at least sometimes! I could just as easily be here typing about being denied and sent home. I honestly think it could have gone either way. This was an experience I would never willingly repeat and I'll highly recommend to everyone to never try this. It might work. It might not. Nobody at the airport is fond of these emergency passports even if they have several vacant visa stamp pages and the words "United States of America" or other similar countries' names written on them. The US Embassy in Bangkok led me to believe that none of this would be a problem, but wow were they wrong. I'm so glad the girl in Chiang Mai Immigration told me beforehand that I definitely need to fly directly into Chiang Mai rather than going through Bangkok because Bangkok would've likely been less merciful to me. I will even say thanks to that girl in Malaysia who gave all the false information because she at least did set aside her own time to sit down and get me checked in well after the proper checkin window had closed, maybe partly due to the fact rhat I made myself clear that i was going to become a very vocally unhappy customer if she didn't help me as I was promised prior. I wrote this out just to inform you all of what this situation may be like and if anyone is considering trying this, I highly recommend that you DON'T. Even if you're successful as I was, it still isn't worthwhile. Just do whatever you have to do to get your standard passport before leaving again. But if you do have to fly anywhere nearby that will accept a temporary passport, Malaysia is almost certainly the place to go. So again, thanks to the checkin lady. Thanks to Dad. Thanks to God.
Thanks to everyone here for reading. I hope this helps someone somehow. 🙏
