📊 DTV at the border — what 100+ recent reports actually show

I've gone through several months of posts in this group with Claude.ai about DTV entry experiences. Here's the summary, because the same questions keep coming up.

Airports with the most friction

🔴 Phuket (HKT) and Chiang Mai (CNX) stand out. Multiple reports of DTV holders being pulled aside on first entry, questioned for 1–2 hours, asked to show employment contracts, bank balances live on the phone, original invitation letters from Muay Thai gyms or cooking schools, and even onward tickets in one Phuket case.

🟢 Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK) are generally smooth. Most reports describe 30 seconds and a stamp. Occasional secondary interviews happen but they're the exception.

What officers actually ask

* What you'll be doing in Thailand

* Employment contract (a problem for freelancers and self-employed)

* Live bank balance on your phone

* Original invitation letter or schedule from your soft power activity

* Why you applied through another country and not your home country

* Onward ticket (rare, but reported in Phuket)

Important finding

I did not find a single first-hand report of someone with a valid DTV being denied entry. Long interviews, yes. Stress, yes. Refused entry, no. Everyone got their stamp eventually.

Practical takeaway

On your first entry, especially through HKT or CNX, carry:

* Bank statement showing 500k THB

* Soft power invitation letter or employment contract

* Proof of accommodation

* A clear, simple answer to "what will you do here"

Have it ready on your phone or printed. The officers who give people a hard time are looking for hesitation, not for reasons to reject you.

Hope this helps anyone stressing about their first arrival. Safe travels 🇹🇭
Answer summary
Recent experiences reveal significant differences in entry procedures for DTV holders at Thai airports. Phuket and Chiang Mai present challenges, with lengthy interrogations and document demands, while Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports typically ensure a smoother process. Travelers are advised to prepare specific documents, like proof of funds and invitation letters, to ease entry. Notably, no reports of denied entries have surfaced, with all DTV holders eventually receiving their stamps. This summary highlights essential documents to carry and practical tips for a successful entry.

I am still worried that they might require me to apply from a country that I am a resident or citizen of. I want to apply for the Non O immigrant retirement 90 visa while I am in Vietnam, but I am not a citizen or resident, I would just be on a tourist visa. How can I know this is ok, so I do not worry about it?

If you come in with nonO, no need of return ticket. If you have money in your account, before expiration if 3 months, you have ask for an extension for a year that means applying for retirement visa. Go straight to the immigration office n apply by yourself. You need to get the bank certificate from the bank that you have the required amount, it's enough n no need of notarization. No need agent n don't spend money on agent id you have required deposit. I have done it myself n spent only 1900 THB. You will need to show your TM30 n written contract of house or condo or room plus ID of the owner etc.

Not true, you must show a ticket goin out Thai before ending the 90 days. Buy a refunding ticket to go anywhere, later when you receive the one year extension you can ask for refund ticket

The Air B and B host will have to give me their ID and the TM30 Completion form?

David Vankerkhoven air b n b will be expensive, better stay there or in a hotel for a week or so n look for somewhere to rent on monthly basis. In principle host or owner has to provide u with TM30 , contract n ID. But some owners do not know n not willing to get n give you. So u have to do on ur own like my case. Return ticket in my case they did not ask but safer if you can get one as it is quite strict now. Make sure you get the tm 30 within 24 hours f ur arrival or 1600 THB fine.

It has become serious n they will provide. If they don't want to go along, u get the needed doc n go by yourself. Or look for a place where they provide.

If I would have trouble getting the TM30 form from the Air B and B host, with the contract and their ID, what other place could I stay at where getting this documents would not be a problem?

No, you don’t need onward travel with the non immigrant O. Depends on what country you are from regarding your financials. If your embassy still provides proof of income, then that is usually notarized by your embassy. If you are from most countries then you will need to have opened a Thai Bank account within the first week or so upon arrival and deposit ฿800,000 minimum in your new bank account then apply for the one year extension of permission to stay in the Kingdom with a minimum of 15 days left on your non immigrant visa. You may be able to get a 7 day extension if your paperwork is incomplete, you would have to ask at your local immigration office. It would be the full ฿1,900 though. If not, you would have to leave, come back in on a tourist exempt, then apply to change your visa type to a non immigrant based on retirement for ฿2,000 showing the ฿800,000 on the day you apply then wait for it to be approved then depending on which office you are applying for your extension of permission to stay in the Kingdom, you can apply either 45 days before your O 90 day expires at busy offices or 30 days before it expires at the other offices for ฿1,900. When doing anything at Thai immigration offices you should use blue ink to fill out forms and you need to sign every page, also in blue ink.

Jim McGowan I applied in NZ and was asked for that, but they did so in a separate email after I submitted the e-visa form. I suggest David be prepared for that but do not submit it first up if he wants open ended travel. And correct - apply before you get to Thailand for a Non O based on being over 50.
