Should I get a multi-entry tourist visa or use visa exemption for my trips to Thailand?

I plan to return to Thailand around September 15th from the US. I have already gone to Thailand 2 other times this year. first trip in January for 18 days. Next trip was 60 but extended for another 25. Im planning another 60 day trip end of the year. I’m looking at buying the 200 dollar 6 month multi entry tourist visa. Or will it be fine to just fly in from the US on a visa exemption and save the 200 dollars. I’ve seen lots of conflicting information. Some people seem to think since I left the country and returned home I could do another visa exempt trip. because there isn’t technically a limit to the amount of trips one is allowed.

I don’t mind paying the 200 dollars for the multi entry tourist visa. I don’t work when I’m in Thailand and I have financial means to support myself. I was leaning on the mutil entry tourist visa because I want to visit Thailand a few more times before second to move permanently. I don’t qualify for retirement visa because I’m too young and I will most likely have to marry my girlfriend. Which I do plan on doing but I’m still dating her. it’s been only 6 months 1/2 long distance. While I’m doing ok financially I don’t qualify for the rich millionaire visa, I looked at the DTV, but I don’t take any classes or have a job to work remotely yet. Maybe I could sign up for language classes since my Thai is very limited.

I want to do everything legal and not overstay or get banned from my future. potential homeland. I love Thailand like many of you here and can see myself being happy for the rest of my life there is a real possibility.

Please feel free to answer if you have any information that reliable and relevant to my situation. I know the visa exempt may go down to 30 which is why I’m looking at the multI entry tourist visa as the likely option.

Thanks.

Spend the money on the METV. It's totally online these days. I suggest still carrying your paperwork- accommodation, onward flight, DTAC, as my I.O. still scanned my paperwork. Yes, the Single Entry is cheaper. But if you know you will travel more than once .......

By the time you go the visa exemption will probably been reduced to 30 days ,you can buy a 60 days single entry tourist visa that will be cheaper than a 6 month multiple entry tourist visa.

On entering this time I was warned to get 3 month tourist visa by immigration officer that next time I would not be allowed in on visa exempt,I was here last time approximately 12 months ago when I used visa exempt plus 30 day extension.IO then saw I had previously had a non o wife visa and wanted to know why I had not kept it going.so cracking down I think

Are you only planning to travel one time in September? If so, there's no benefit in the Multiple entry version of the tourist visa. Just get a single entry and save the money. If you would be denied on the single entry, you would be denied on the multiple entry as well.

what do you mean by travel one time? This will be my 3rd trip this year. One 18 day one 85 day. This would be 60 day trip from Sep-Nov. probably wouldn’t consider extending or anything.

A multiple entry visa is for entering MULTIPLE times. So if you are traveling to Thailand ONE time, why would you get a multiple entry visa? Get the single entry visa, it costs much less money.

That’s what I’m trying to figure out. Might have to pay the 600,000 Thai baht for the Thailand privilege card. but I see they have some issues with those in terms of taking a long time to issue.(plus it’s a lot of money basically 4,000 USD per year.) Or get the DTV visa somehow. If I don’t get married that is. Their government just want foreigners to get married after 30-60 days I guess. I’m trying to follow the laws that’s why I asked the question. I wasn’t saying Thailand should change their entire legal process just for me.

Having a girlfriend here is basically showing that you are not a tourist. Tourist visas are for people making short trips to Thailand on vacation. You need to find a longer term visa that you can qualify for. If you can't qualify for any, then that means you can't come. That's how every country works. You don't get to go somewhere just because you want to go there.

so what am I supposed to do? Or is there nothing for me to besides visit 120 days only per year?

Yes, but you are truly asking to be denied entry with all these entries and so much time in Thailand as a tourist.

Definitely get the METV. Line up your ducks in a row

$20,000 baht

Hotel reservations

Onward or return ticket.

Immigration will definitely be looking at your previous entries and extensions.

KindRadish1951 should I get a hotel reservations? I provided my GF house. But I haven’t submitted the Visa yet because I haven’t bought the plane tickets yet. I do travel to other areas and rent hotels but usually we plan it when she has time off work.

Thomas Servais you only need a single entry tourist visa. Cheaper then a METV. Your gf house is ok but she has to White you an invitation letter.

It would be a good idea to get a hotel for at least one day. Print out your itinerary. They do ask but it’s not something they usually do. Better safe than sorry. “Up to you”!

KindRadish1951 good advice. Pulled aside last entry after numerous visa exempt entries the past 10 years. METV applied for and granted. Showed more than 20k thb in one bank account, 3 days hotel reservation, and an expected first flight out date..( no details) Seems METV is my future after being ‘flagged’… context, 59yo, only visited for tourism, extended my visa once, but probably flew in 20 times the last 10 years

You could get a single entry 60 day then again for your second trip. £30 so probably $40 ish each.

Bit wild planning to marry to get a visa. I would explore DTV some more.

Paul Jones sorry it wasn’t like I was just marrying her to get a visa. I do love her but I want to see how it goes for the next 6-12 months before even considering marriage. Since I’m new to Thailand and still learning the ropes.

Technically there isn't a limit to the number of visa exempt entries you can have but the immigration officers at the border tend to use the amount of time you spend in Thailand as a rule of thumb. Once you start getting up to 150 days over the past 12 to 18 months you are in danger of at least being pulled aside if not denied entry. A standard tourist visa isn't much better than a visa exempt entry, both are intended for short term tourism

yes that’s what I’ve gathered. I don’t know where I fit. I’m a tourist technically and have outside income so I don’t have to work while staying in Thailand. I just visit longer than most tourist. If I was older I would fit into the retirement visa but I guess there aren’t many people in a situation like myself. Thanks to the advice.

your options are limited if you're under 50, not married and not working in Thailand. Really you only have a DTV based on Soft Power or a Thai Privilege visa

I have the same problem. My conclusion was: Not go to Thailand. Without anger but sad. Because of this situation, I am starting to focus on other countries. This is very anecdotal, of course, but it could also be a reason for the decline in tourist numbers in Thailand.

If it’s just a short trip , 30 - 60 days

With your 2nd trip this year bearing 85 days

You can get a METV to keep everyone happy 😃
