As of now, many establishments in Bangkok remain closed or operating under restrictions due to COVID-19 measures. Essential places like Big C, Tesco, Villa Market, and banks are open, although many restaurants are limited to takeout only. Some areas of supermarkets have sections closed, and larger malls like MBK are not fully operational. Public transport like BTS is still running, and local markets are open, albeit with reduced activity and fewer tourists. Caution is advised as many services, including hair salons, face strict regulations.
All this same stuff is closed in Hat Yai. The big night markets have also been (because covid only comes out at night). However, the Sunday morning market still has thousands of people...
roads, public transport, hospitals, most offices, pharmacies, supermarkets, some other shops, markets, streetfood vendors, and restaurants (eat out only).
Matthew Garry. These pictures were taken before lockdown. Already one whole floor has closed and the cheap t-shirts and souvenirs (what's left of them) have relocated to another floor. The tech floor was operating at about 30%. The plan for MBK is to convert most of the space to office units. The department store Tokyu has closed permanently, so I've no idea what the plan is for that area. Whatever happens, the new MBK will be totally changed to the old one.
Ben Sevilla. In the previously high-density tourist areas many 7-11s are closed and have been for months. The custom is just not there to maintain so many empty stores. These two are off Sukhumvit between Asok and Nana, an area which has been decimated through Covid
Jesse Pye. Yeah, it's funny, I was in Cha-am a few weeks ago, and there were about seven 7-11s all open on a stretch of road along the beach no more than four kilometres long. You're right, they'll open/close 7-11s wherever the customers are.
I live in Cha Am and through this pandemic we have not lost a single
****
. Most businesses in Cha Am don’t rely on international tourism. That’s not saying that everyone is not hurting. Domestic tourism and local trade has also dropped, especially in these last few months.
Andy Oswald. Exactly. All the 7-11s along that beach strip all seemed to be busy. The problem with the tourist areas in Bangkok, and I've seen it around that Sukhumvit area, Patpong and Khao San Road, is that there is a 7-11 every 50-100 metres. When you've no tourists there's no point in maintaining all of them, so I guess the less profitable are the ones than close.
Cherokee Cillie. That is EXACTLY my thoughts when I was in Patong a couple of months ago. It was an eerie feeling, like I was walking through an abandoned film set, or a film set from one of those "end of the world" movies where mankind has been wiped out leaving just the buildings standing
Not much. Restaurants are take out only. Malls are closed. Even in Big C or Lotus certain sections are closed. Apparently kids clothes are not “essential items”.
Not sure what you are looking for but if it’s not a bank or supermarket it’s probably closed.
