While this doesn't apply to me at the present time (as I already own 2 vehicles, a car and a motorcycle), and don't intend on selling or purchasing any vehicles anytime soon, but can anyone shed some light on this topic?

Some kind of "permit" is required for foreigners purchasing vehicles in Thailand? That concerns me, but perhaps it's being overhyped when in fact it may be nothing at all.

In the comments section of the video, one guy seems to confirm it only applies in Chumphon province and it's a simple 5 Baht document from the Land Transport Department.

Just wondering if anyone has purchased a vehicle recently and had to produce anything beyond the usual passport + residence permit (from immigration or your embassy) OR yellow book OR work permit + fill in the forms provided by the seller or showroom?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion centers around the requirements for foreigners wishing to purchase vehicles in Thailand. Concerns were raised about a permit requirement, with some commenters stating that no additional documents beyond a passport and residency proof were necessary for their recent purchases. It was mentioned that a 5 Baht document may be required in Chumphon province, but overall, most experiences suggest that standard identification and residency documents suffice.

No, just bought another motorcycle and passport with visa and certificate of residency from immigration is all that was asked for.

Thats what I expected. Work permit is accepted in lieu of residency certificate.

I have heard can’t own vehicles in Laos, maybe Thailand will go the same way, just like not owning houses 🤔🤔🤔

Houses can be owned, it's land that can't be.

agreed 👍

technically it’s a thought, however try moving your house from her land 🤣🤣🤣

And yes I know it’s the land rule, that’s why foreigners can buy condos as long as they are designated to be foreign owned

@Paul ******
yes when she kicks you out you can remove the house

that's why you need a good lawyer to set up a usufruct agreement giving you the right to reside on the property you own even though the land isn't in your name.

@Paul ******
yes, though the majority don’t think to do that

I seriously doubt Thailand will ban foreign ownership of vehicles. That would be ridiculous.

I think Laos allows foreigners to own vehicles, but they have different colored license plates. You can tell what is local and foreign owned by looking at the color.

Black lettering on yellow = privately owned, Lao national

Light blue lettering on yellow = privately owned, foreign national

Black lettering on white = company owned, Lao ownership

Light blue lettering on white = company owned, foreign ownership

I recently purchased a car and only had to show the dealer my passport, visa stamp & Thai drivers license.

Oh I see. The residency certificate is no big deal (a bit of nuisance applying for it) provided your embassy issues one or your local immigration office makes it easy.

No need for a certificate of residency? I've always had to show that.

Just wanted to follow-up and say that I was wrong. After waiting nearly 2 months for my registration and plates, I get a message yesterday saying they need a residency certificate. Never mentioned it until they were ready to actually do the registration paperwork. TIT!

@Paul ******
I was not asked for one.

Can you explain a bit further? What do you mean about big bikes? You mean a separate license?
