I just wanted to share my experience recently opening a new bank account with my retirement visa at SCB in the Isan region.. I am Gen X farang from America, and I already had two Thai bank accounts, one with Bangkok Bank and the other with Kasikorn Bank .. for the Bbank account, I use it only to deal with retirement funds, and it was opened by my visa agent, so I really had nothing to do with it. . For the KBank account, I opened it in the south of Thailand, and it was relatively painless, except that they did require a residence certificate, which entailed a visit to immigration, and then another visit back to the bank branch… For the SCB account opening last week, I showed up with my passport and my one year condo lease , as well as some paperwork about the condo owner, his Thai ID, etc. . Note that I did not bring a TM30.. my purpose of the visit was simply to find out what exactly would be needed to open the new account, to show them what I already have available in terms of documentation, and then I had planned to go back to immigration or to get whatever was needed, before returning to the bank branch next week .. I did not think they would actually open a new bank account for me on the spot .. to my surprise, they looked at all of my documents, and asked to see one additional form of documentation … so I showed them my newly acquired Thai driver license, Although other forms may be acceptable in lieu of a driver license, I am not sure .. one of the employees said something about me possibly needing to go to the AIS store to get some documentation about my SIM card, But then another employee seemed to overrule her .. The only problem was that it took them approximately one hour to scan the chip in my passport; to be honest, I am not sure that I knew passports even contained a chip .. there was a problem with their system, but then they were able to figure it out .. after a total of two hours, I walked out with my new SCB bank account, along with my new ATM debit card and bank book, as well as the mobile banking app that they helped me to download onto my phone .. if not for the passport chip scanning glitch, the entire process would’ve had me in and out of the bank and under one hour….. To say that I was surprised, if not shocked, that I was able to walk out on the same day after only one visit, with my new bank account would be an understatement .. a very pleasant surprise… also, to be honest, I think it helped that I managed to clean up, put on a nice shirt and appear presentable, ha.. I made sure to go on a random weekday afternoon when I did not think the branch would be as busy as it would be on, say, a Monday morning… and I also made it a point to prepare myself mentally and make sure that I would not get annoyed or frustrated… those things may seem trivial, but in Thailand, I think they actually go a very long way…. Overall, a very pleasant experience… Way to go Thailand, and way to go Siam Commercial Bank . ✌️

Sorry you have to deal with rude idiots in the forum.

Congratulations on your new bank account.

What type of visa are you on?

OP
Cliff Sussman Thanks.. it's the Non-O.. I probably should have specified that in my original post. 👍

SwelteringChill this makes all the difference because, apparently, the banks no longer give accounts for tourist visas.

OP
Cliff Sussman True, but I also probably should have specified that I have non-O retirement visa b/c I think there are different requirements even within the "retirement" designation- for example, a non-O retirement visas vs non-OA (or whatever it's called ?) retirement visas .. but yeah as far as I know, it's very difficult now to open a Thai bank account on any type of tourist visa, including the DTV .

I think the process is generally easier ( not easy 555) if you have the retirement visa. Those looking to open a bank account to obtain the visa seem to have a greater struggle.

Gen X from America didnt know the US passport has chip on front cover? Even this American Baby boomer knew that 🤣. But scanning it? Immigration readers are different no doubt. Kbank didn’t try scan anything. The registered mobile phone sim is the most important take away from that long read. Drivers’s license has no bearing in opening a bank account.

Todd Capron "Drivers’s license has no bearing in opening a bank account." . . this is not really true. When opening an account, most Thai banks will ask for two different documents to verify your idendity. One is definitely always the passport, and the other one can be your Thai or foreign drivers license or just another ID-card that contains your picture.

OP
Todd Capron Guilty as charged on the passport chip thing, ha.. but im not sure what you mean by ‘registered mobile phone SIM’ since as i mentioned, they did not make me go to AIS and then return, as it seems like sometimes people have been required to do.. re the driver license, unfortunately i cant remember the exact “ask” they had- i think they asked me for another form of Thai id with a picture- though it might have been different verbiage, i just cant remember since it was a flurry of activity and im surprised I remembered as much detail as i did to type my long novel above . 😆

SwelteringChill they just always ask for two forms of identification. One document is always your passport, and the second indentification can be a drivers license - important part is that it contains your picture

You do realise that each branch has their own set of criteria and sometimes staff within that branch also. It's not an exact science and what works for Peter won't work for Paul. Good to know you are American, maybe they gave you triple Platinum status with slaw on the side, to celebrate you needing three accounts with three different banks 😉

OP
TaupeRaspberry5284 To your first point, yes each branch is different, and I would even say that which employee you wind up sitting in front of is different than the employee sitting next to her, and might operate differently .. .. Also, no one "needs" three bank accounts at different banks in Thailand, just like no one "needs" to ever leave their home country- yet here we are.. it's good to be diversified, esp since one of my accounts is only used for visa purposes.. To your last point- please do not assume that all Americans think we are "special".. indeed, there is a reason why many of us (and more and more each passing year) are heading for the exits of that place .. I did not move 15,000 km from the US to continue talking about the US- but just know many of us are on the same page as yourself, and of most of the sane nations of the world . ✌️

One of the very few downsides of Thailand is, their inane ability to make the simplest tasks so difficult.

Thanks for your post. It’s reassuring. I’ve also had good experiences with both SCB and KBank when opening accounts. Am grateful and impressed how far they go to accommodate foreigners. If you’ve ever dealt with banks in Japan you’ll probably agree.

Mark Robinson Some K-Bank branches are now insisting on two pictorial forms of home country ID. Passport and Driving Licence acceptable for the UK in lieu of the ID card most other countries issue their nationals!

I doubt they have the technical capability to scan the chip in your passport. They probably just gave up.

Gordon Howes Yeah i kinda figured that might be a little too much info, but i went ahead and included it anyway.. just thought it might be helpful to have a slight indication of my general age bracket (1963-1982) if it matters at all, which it probably does not .. but thanks for letting us know you are so easily triggered 👍
