What Is the Process for Applying for a Non-O Immigrant Volunteer Visa at the Vientiane Embassy?

I want to give an update on my recent experience applying for a volunteer visa at Vientiane Embassy, Laos.

This week I applied for a Non-O Immigrant Volunteer Visa at the Embassy with all of the correct paperwork from my foundation. When handing them the paperwork, they asked me for a thai bank statement, which I provided. I asked if they wanted a copy of my Australian bank statement, they said no.

I was told to come back the next day to collect my visa.

The next day I went back and I was called into the office, they wanted to know:

1. How I had a thai bank account without a work permit (I explained in Chiang Mai, Bangkok Bank offers accounts to tourists, students etc)

2. Wanted proof that the funds in my Thai bank account, came directly from my Australian bank account

3. Wanted proof of how I supported myself in Thailand

They said to bring an Australian bank statement back that afternoon before 4pm.

I left the embassy and found an internet Cafe, printed out my Australia Bank Statement showing the transfers from my AU account to my Bangkok Bank account, and also proof of funds incoming (from family).

I then returned that afternoon and handed them the paperwork. They said they'll check it again and to come back the next day.

I went back the next day and they handed me my visa all approved.

It doesn't appear to be a firm rule, but be aware, you may be asked to provide both a thai and foreign bank account statement.

You may also be asked to show the funds in your thai account came from your bank account in your home country.

You may also be asked to show proof of how you're supporting yourself in Thailand.

Additionally:

It also didn't feel like they were trying to catch me out, they were actually very helpful when I asked exactly what they needed and even said they'd allow me to lodge the extra paperwork up until 4.30 if I couldn't get back by 4pm.

they are actually pretty consistent up there. Since they have that new head person it seemed to iron a lot of the individual request stuff out pretty much.

Thank you for that detailed re-cap (y) Congrats that you got the visa. You clearly went prepared for different contingencies and didn't let their request for more documentation throw you off the track as far as you getting the visa.
