Has anyone had any recent experience with a short term 3 month single entry tourist visa in Vientiane recently? How long did it take and what additional documents did they request (if any)?

Also, did they need you to have a flight booked for Thailand or were you able to travel overland from Vientiane to Nong Khai?

I guess you didn't get the ED visa you applied for last month in HCMC? Do you know why not?

A tourist visa is a 60 day visa which you can extend for 30 days at an immigration office inside Thailand. Travel by train should be OK. In Vientiane you need to visit the consulate to pay for your application after you submit it, must be in Thai baht

I actually did get an ED visa but due to a change of plans (a long story), I will not be continuing this arrangement and will get a tourist visa instead to avoid any issues with visa cancellation.

The main question is whether you need to show a flight on the visa application, and if so, how much time to leave. I'd prefer to return overland whenever the visa is approved and fly onwards from Udon Thani.

I have traveled two times via train using Nong Khai one time with tourist visa and another time with non-o family visa. No issue but while applying for tourist visa i submitted entry and exit flight booking which was done by my agency. No issue at all as visa was approved within 1 working day.

Do you mean a Thai SETV? If so, then it’s a 60 day visa not 3 months.

Tomas Arthur Yes. Can be extended but extension is not guaranteed. And your onward travel should also be within the first 60 days. So no, not 3 months and not semantics.
