Chiang Mai...seeing reports of lots of flooding...expected arrival is on 1 October. Thoughts? Don't really need to have open toursist sites..just wondering how the situation is without new media hype and drama.

TLDR : Answer Summary
As of now, floodwaters in Chiang Mai are subsiding, with many locals experiencing minimal issues. However, certain areas, notably near the Ping River, remain affected, with reports of displacement and cleanup underway. While daytime weather is generally good, some areas are still dealing with rain and residual water. Travel may be affected, particularly in low-lying regions, but many suggest avoiding the most impacted areas for a smoother experience. Travelers are advised to stay informed and possibly reconsider areas to visit during their stay.

Cancel your trip, and never again book in the rainseason.
I am well acquainted with rain and weather and have spent a life of responding to disasters around the world. Volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, floods, tornadoes...driven through blizzards. Also aware that canceling trips can cause more economic hardships for areas dependent on visitors. The last half of a decade has been challenging for business owners around the world.

Just bring along your scuba gear and you're golden 😄
I think we will be ok for the first week...we will be mindful of the fact that life for everyone is not the same, and hopefully find ways to help in a non-intrusive manner.
of you stay away from the Ping river and night market area, you will be okay. Old town or Nimman are the options.
Its sad to see the affected people 😔😢

Not too bad if you don’t go to the Ping River and night bazar area. As long as you avoid that you’ll be more than fine. Mostly good weather during the day and rain at night the last 2 days.

Nothing much here just some flash floods where rain continues falls for few days and water med to be discharged, we are good here
this is not my video; I was there 3 days ago but left due to flooding.

It's still a mess, some people are displaced, still power outs in areas and there's still a lot of water but cleanup is underway. What I've seen has nothing to do with media, it's people I know who are not in their homes, knee deep water in many places? 🤷
We are staying for the 1st week North of the city centre...and I'm not driving...lol. So, just don't want to get out to swim...we do not care if places are closed...this will be our first trip into Northern Thailand and more of an exploratory trip and not necessarily to see all the sites.
old city should be fine and right north of there is also ok ATM. But I'm no weatherman. Do expect the unexpected. This is Thailand. Sorry for the non answer 😅. However there's a FB page called Chiang Mai News in English and they do a real good job at keeping the expat community informed.
I have that group now...thanks, I appreciate the non-answer answer...I'm a GENX survivor and a mostly laid back person when it comes to travel, my wife is Filipina and if we can get rice at least once a day we are living large...lol. If we have dried fish, that is a party. We have zero expectations...thank you.
just spent 2 weeks in Chang Mai and didn't have a problem. Yes flooding but not to the extent of Chang rai. Most places are open as usual. Tourist spots restaurants bars etc. areas near the ping river and other low lying areas affected but it's passing now. Today the sun is shining and won't take long to dry out. Enjoy your stay Nammin and surrounding area's great place to stay.
