Hi everyone, I’d like to ask for some advice regarding a DTV case.

The applicant is a German citizen who has deregistered from Germany and currently has no legal residence in any country outside Thailand.

Under the updated DTV requirements, would the correct approach be for her to first go to a third country where she can legally obtain a residence certificate/residence status and also obtain a criminal record clearance certificate, and then apply for the DTV through the Thai Embassy/Consulate in that country?

If so, which countries would be suitable for this?
Answer summary
The applicant, a German citizen with no legal residence anywhere, is inquiring about the best procedure to apply for a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) in Thailand, given the new requirements. The responses suggest that the applicant should consider returning to Germany to apply, as it is possible to obtain necessary documents like a residence certificate and a criminal record clearance certificate from there, even if they are no longer officially registered. Multiple comments express that applying from Germany is the most straightforward option, cautioning against attempting to create a third-country residence for documentation purposes.

She must have a passport otherwise she is not getting a visa. If she is not a PR somewhere else that is where she has to apply the country that issued her passport. Either that or she has to apply for and get PR somewhere else and then apply.

If you don’t have any other permanent residence then you’re not a tourist to them that’s the point I think and why they require proof of permanent residence to apply.

It’s fair that many of us won’t be keeping a second home and all the bills that come with that if traveling for 5 years but they expect you to have one at least at the start I guess.

I think I saw one person say they used their drivers licence as proof of residence so maybe if she has a licence in Germany still she can put the address for that at a relatives home and use that as her proof of residence? I’m sure someone will say if it’s not enough but it’s just an idea.

Apply from Germany online using your German passport, not sure how you would obtain a police check though?

You can try applying from Germany. One of our previous clients has deregistered from Germany, but submitted alternative documents and was approved.

For people with no technical residence, going back to the citizenship country that they hold the passport of, where they have legal right of residence, is the obvious answer.

Even if you have signed out of a home country, you have the right to reside there on return.

Of course you could just reside there again, but this means you have to register again and in some cases that will cause negative tax issues. They could tax you retroactively for all the years you where gone...

If you’re already deregistered and living in Thailand without another real residence, inventing a third-country “paper residence” just to mint a police certificate is a red-flag path for many embassies. Cleaner usually: follow the embassys published list for Germans abroad (Führungszeugnis / police certificate channels) rather than manufacturing a status you don’t have. Document-trail inconsistency kills more DTV files than a missing stamp.

I'm in a similar situation as an italian national no longer registered in as resident there. They clearly require "permanent residency". I'm afraid even the thai embassy in Italy will reject me

They require citizenship or PR. PR is only required if applying from a country where you are not a citizen. Unless you have PR somewhere else you apply in the country that issues your passport.

To obtain a Residence Card in a country you normally need to live there first for many years with a valid visa.... 🫣 usually a working or marriage visa.

Get a criminal record clearance from Thailand and another when they arrive in Germany, then apply in Germany.

The rule is you must have a permanent residency from the country you apply from. Since you are abgemeldet from Einwohnermeldeamt and you do not have any other permanent residency, I think your best bet is still Germany. Others will just reject you because they don't care about your Abmeldung

No, just apply from Germany. Doesn't matter if that person isn't registered there anymore. If they have a German passport, they need to apply via the German embassy

1000s of people have no residence anywhere anymore. What’s so hard to understand that for example you live 90 days in Kuala Lumpur, 45 days in Vietnam, 60 days in Bali, and are unregistered in your home country… that you have no long term residency anywhere.

The rule at 31 August makes 0 sense either.

Suddenly everyone need to take a long and expensive international flight to be able to apply for a DTV. Meanwhile they gave DTV to even unemployed people with a cooking class.

He or she stays German citizen so obviously they need to apply in Germany. Which in itself is already a burden to fly there just to be able to apply for a dtv today.

In your mind people like that have to be forced to live somewhere 183 days to get residency to then finally be able to apply for a dtv? That’s even more crazy then it already is.

The only thing that makes sense is the criminal record document. They let in 10 000s of people on a dtv without checking criminal record in
*********

Now that’s a normal new rule. Needing to apply in your nationality country isn’t.

Why you think everyone before, applied in Vietnam or Malaysia or Indonesia for a dtv?

Because they don’t live in Europe or Australia anymore longterm. Regardless if they are still registered there or not.

DTV_BegPecker They wanted to spread the workload out, Loas and Vietnam were processing the bulk of the visas. The idea was that making everyone apply would 1) help spread the load across many consulates and 2) paperwork submitted in a home country would probably be easier to review and be less likely to be rejected as the local embassy would probably be more familiar with what they were reviewing.

So, it might actually make it easier to get due to less erroneous rejections.

exactly… also arriving there on a dtv or without one doesn’t make people suddenly different or more rich.

It just means you bought a cooking class or Muay Thai class for 6-9 months. Nothing else is different in reality.

So it’s kind of a ridiculous situation that they ask people to do it back home. What has that as a benefit for Thailand? Nothing…

The only thing that makes sense is the criminal record. Which they didn’t do for 2,5y so they gave dtv already to 10 000s who might have a criminal record but never been checked.

relax little man! My neth worth is 16M baht at 39.

That doesn’t mean I want to fly to Amsterdam 14h and waste 30k baht for a visa I could get in a 2h flight to Da Nang for 6k baht.

Who you think you even are to assume you have more money than the average Farang in Thailand.

What a joke

I don’t disagree with you but it’s because it’s still intended as a tourist visa not a live in the country straight for 5 years visa so they expect us to have a home somewhere else. It’s stupid because who’s keeping all the bills of a residence in a different county if they’re traveling for 5 years and the visa literally is letting them effectively live there.

It’s a long term visa in a short term visa’s dress. Obviously everyone’s still going to treat it like a long term visa and live there the whole 5 years.

Thailand, with the regulations that went into effect Aug 31st. Correcting those abuses, and tightening up financially on the requirements. If you can't afford to at least go home (passport country), Thailand doesn't want you here.

DTV_BegPecker yeah I know. Meanwhile they give it for free to unemployed people 🙈

But let’s question and make it hard for people who actually make remote money 😂

you’re right sorry - I’m getting confused because you have to prove your address so I am thinking how do you do that in your citizen country if you don’t live there anymore
