Re Entry at Suvannaphum Airport

My partner has a history of frequent travel to and from Thailand on tourist visas, and he previously held an ED visa once.

He is currently in Ireland and plans to return to Thailand with me (I’m Thai) at the end of this month. The main purpose of this trip is for us to get married.

Given his travel history, could this be considered misuse of a tourist visa? And would it be acceptable for him to explain to Immigration that he is entering Thailand to get married if he is questioned at the airport?

Any advice from anyone familiar with Thai immigration/visa rules would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Answer summary
The question revolves around the immigration status of a partner planning to enter Thailand on a tourist visa for marriage. It's crucial to understand that while getting married on a tourist visa is allowed, frequent entries on tourist visas may lead to scrutiny from immigration officers. The partner should ideally apply for a Non-O visa for a longer stay without complications. It's advised to carry documentation related to the marriage plans, and it's important to clarify the type of visa being used (tourist or visa-exempt) and adhere to the respective entry rules. Preparation of the necessary paperwork and understanding the recent immigration policies can enhance the chances of smooth entry.

Immigration officer doesn't worry if you are married or away to get married ,get the correct visa before you go or go visa Exempt if your passport allows then apply for Married visa once you get Hitched

He will need an Irish certificate showing he is free to marry which needs to be applied for 4 months in advance. Can be issued in Bangkok from the Irish embassy

Your partner might have a problem unless you can prove your getting married. If you're entering on a non visa. Make sure your in before 10th Sept. From 10th it's reverts back to 30 days.

I'm sorry but if you are Thai why don't you go ask immigration yourself

On a tourist E visa give you 60 days I was going to go to immigration to extend it 30 days more as I used to do this when back in the days it was 30 days on entry and on 45 days entry airline say not and Thai passport control say nothing so what change now as I see you got to get a flight out of Thailand before the 60 days is up

They are getting tougher on this. Tell him to get a visa otherwise he'll be banned - AND WORST still making a flight all the way back to Ireland.

I was married in Thailand on visa exemption. Never had any issues and my wife lived in uk for 8 years without any problem. I’m moving to Thailand in two weeks.

Don't confuse the immigration officer with your purpose of your visit ka. If you apply for Edvisa only talk about study, if you're apply for tourist, talk about tourist attractions.
Helloj******

OP
The thing is, there's actually a reason he got issued a METV this time. yes, it's a tourist visa, so technically he's meant to be entering as a tourist. But given his previous entry stamps, he'll likely get pulled aside for questioning again, like what happened on his last entry in May.

So my question is: would it be possible to mention, at immigration, that we're getting married and back that up with the evidence we have from the embassy about collecting the certificate? Is that something we're even allowed to bring up in that context?
Tassanee ***********
Tassanee ***********
Don’t have to mention about getting married ka, he can say that he is in a serious relationship with you and would like to spend more time with you (and of course in future he want to purpose you) this time he wants to getting to know your family members, your friends, how you grown up. Visit your hometown, learning your family culture.

I was recently in this same predicament, I have been living in. Thailand for over 10 years and in that time I have been border bouncing 3 ed visas a volunteer visa and 2 non b visas, last year I left my job and switched to a ed visa and it ran out at the start of August

I planned on getting a DTV as I am a director of a company in the UK but I also planned on getting married to my thai partner so had already got the affirmation paper work from my embassy and was just waiting for a slot to become available so we could get married I booked everything for the DTV but at last minute changed my mind and decided I would be better off getting a marriage visa so moved my money to my thai account and went vitenam with my partner and son for 2 days and flew back in, I went through the thai passport line as my wife to be and son both have thai passports and the immigration officer called 2 other people over once he saw my passport, I explained that we was getting married and i was going to switch to a non o visa but we was just waiting for a free slot and showed them all my paper work that I had got so I could get married in thailand,

They let me in but said this is the last time I can come in on a visa exempt and i have to get a proper visa within the 60 days,

So my advice is make sure your partner has hes affirmation paper work to show that you ate indeed coming in to get married and you should be fine

Thank you so much for the advice. Yes we have the paper ready to collect but the problem is we only have 60days to get the marriage papers done and i’m not so sure if the queue for legalization and district is going to be long or not. Have to take a risk i guess.

Helloja_5555 get a agent to get the legalization done as the waiting list was quite long in Bangkok and pattaya, also the district wait is at least 2 months, but you can also use a agent for this, i spoke to a agent in hua hin who could get me married the next day for 8500 bhat but I didn't do it because I had time to just wait in the queue

If he's genuinely entering to get married, I highly recommend bringing the marriage paperwork (eg solemenization appointment) to show to the IO in case he's questioned.

Helloja_5555 at minimum get a tourist visa, but to let you know you may not get an appointment at the amphur in banglamung Pattaya right away I had everything sorted in Feb this year, went to Banglamung told us to come back in 3 months, so went back in 3 months was told again to come back in November this year🙄 but went to rayong got it sorted within a week my advice would be to make an appointment to sign marriage at you're amphur of choice whilst still in Ireland if possible and travel within them dates.

Apply on eVisa website for a tourist visa but yes his entries will be considered by immigration and he may be denied entry. Entering on 30-DAY VISA EXEMPT may be bad too

There are two separate issues here.

First, getting married while legally in Thailand on a tourist visa or visa-exempt entry is not itself prohibited. Thailand does not have a fiancé visa, and a marriage-based Non-Immigrant O visa normally requires the couple to be married already. He should answer Immigration truthfully if questioned: he is visiting for a limited period, intends to register the marriage, and will leave or apply for the appropriate status through the lawful process afterwards.

Second, frequent entries and long stays using tourist visas or visa exemption can attract scrutiny if the pattern appears to show somebody effectively living or working in Thailand. A visa also does not guarantee admission. Immigration officers make the final decision at the checkpoint.

He should carry an onward ticket within his permitted stay, proof of accommodation and funds, details of the marriage arrangements, relationship evidence, and evidence of his life and obligations outside Thailand. He should answer questions directly and consistently rather than describing himself simply as a tourist if specifically asked about the marriage.

One important distinction is whether he has an actual tourist visa or intends to enter visa-exempt. From 15 September 2026, eligible passport holders, including British and Irish citizens, receive only 30 days visa-exempt and are limited to two visa-exempt entries per calendar year. If he has already used two such entries during 2026, he should obtain an appropriate visa rather than relying on another exemption.

Nobody can assess the risk properly without knowing his nationality, his entry and departure dates during the past two years, whether those entries were visa-exempt or on actual visas, and whether he has ever overstayed, been refused entry or worked while in Thailand.
Steve *******
Steve *******
Graham Lynch The two visa exempt entries per calendar year only applies to land border entries, technically there's no limit to entering by air.
Graham *******
Graham *******
Steve Greir Steve, you are correct. Thank you for pointing that out.

However, the underlying Royal Gazette notification confines that numerical limit to entry through land-border checkpoints.

There is no equivalent fixed numerical limit for arrivals by air. Frequent air entries can still lead to questioning or refusal if Immigration believes somebody is using visa exemption to live in Thailand rather than visit temporarily, but that is a discretionary assessment, not an automatic two-entry limit.

I therefore withdraw that part of my earlier answer.

If he enters on a tourist visa and then gets stopped and questioned, if he then tells them that he’s entering the country in a tourist visa and planning to get married, they could easily deny him entry as the reason for entry isn’t that if the requested reason. If he plans on getting married, he should enter Thailand on a non O visa which will give him 90 days in the country. This was he will have no problem being stopped and giving the real reason he is entering. Best to air on the side of caution where visa entries are concerned, especially right now when things are quite strict.

There is no entry option that says I plan to get married. Forget that and apply for the correct visa. If that's a tourist visa make sure your boyfriend has the 3 proofs, accommodation booked, a ticket out and 20k baht or equivalent in cash. You've asked a number of similar questions, the answer isn't going to change
