TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for a DTV visa at the Thai embassy, you should indicate a departure date that falls within the duration of your visa, typically 180 days from your arrival. It's common practice to input a date within this timeframe, as you are not obligated to maintain the date entered.

When applying for a visa, always put the departure date within the number of days you'll receive on a stamp into Thailand. So you would put something within 180 days of your arrival date. There is nothing that says you have to keep either of the dates you enter.
