What could cause painful blister-like bites experienced by travelers in Phuket?

I’m hoping by this comes under the ‘everything else’ category! Myself and a group of friends have just returned from a fantastic three week trip to Phuket and the surrounding islands. During the last week there about half the group were bitten/stung. We are trying to identify what it could be. None of us saw or felt what bit us. The first time you are aware you have been bitten is when you notice a small blister. The blister grows in size over a few days and is incredibly painful until it pops. Some of us have been put on antibiotics as the bites got infected. Also seems to cause an upset stomach but this might just be a coincidence. The bite is not itchy - so not likely to be a mosquito or sand fly I think. Does this sound familiar to anyone??

TLDR : Answer Summary
A group of travelers in Phuket reported experiencing painful blister-like bites without observing the biting insect. The blisters become large and painful, requiring antibiotics due to infections. Various suggestions from the community include possibilities such as bites from botflies, jellyfish, sea lice, sandflies, and spiders. While some argue for the likelihood of other insects, there is consensus on the importance of seeking medical advice for proper diagnosis and treatment.

This is obv Sandflies, not spiders. And yes, mosquitoes can cause blisters, etc. But no, u cannot contract Lyme disease in Thailand, it's not a thing here. I live in Thai countryside for many years with spiders, centipedes, snakes, scorpions, crabs, and every type of lizard and insect you can think of. I've had blisters similar to all the pictures above many times and it's always from insects/flies. No need for hospital, home remedies can do the job. In fact, here is a video of what the outside of my house looks like on certain nights.

Sandflies. Those are extremely nasty, tiny insects. To prevent to get bitten, you should use insect spray onto your skin with high percentage of DEET. After you got bitten, try to put "yellow oil" on the effected part of skin, it helps.

If its a sea urchin hit the sting with a Chang bottle.

Ringworm?

Herpes?

Chlamydia? I know those generally happen in the genitalia area but people get freaky when the lights go out in Phuket during the holidays.

Jellyfish?

I have gotten some sort of weird infections from playing in the ocean. I don't really know what it was, looked like

's finger photo. One was smaller an on my eyelid. The other was pretty much the same as her finger.

I suggest you get tested for Lyme disease, they could be Tick bites

Looks like midge bites. I make up a mix of Dettol and baby oil I keep in a spray bottle. Keeps them away. Good luck with your healing 😉

no but I used to get them in the territory.start of looking a bit like a pimple

Sandflies

Found all over Australasia and called midges elsewhere. Tiny tiny flying dots.

Wear sprayon ,

avoid being unprotected early and late. Do not scratch if bitten you will be on fire for days. Use soothing ointment

Take strong antihistamine like phenergan before bed.

Do not itch no matter what ;it will ease earlier.

I recently left Nai yang beach area with 50+ bites over 3 days. I’m not usually eaten in Thailand and was most surprised. I visited the beach near the airport for 2 days (no bites) before moving to the opposite end of the beach to another hotel and a different area of the beach. (The sun beds area)

Same details - red, blistered - some were very itchy, some not. My bites were in groups of 2 - 6.

in lines.

I checked the bed for bed bugs and found nothing.

The chemist said it was sand fleas.

After leaving the area they disappeared over 12 days. Weirdly, the last day I stayed in the room instead of going to the beach - I got another 10 bites. There was sand residue in the room.

No, mine were corn sized at largest and not single bites.

Check with your pharmacist or GP.

I have lived here for more than 15 years and have used Elomet

or Fucidin , both creams, which in the UK you will maybe have to get a prescription for.

On the other hand you

might be able to buy it

OTC just as we do here, take care.

Try running a photo through Google lens and see if it turns up anything that makes sense

great idea!! Will do that now

The only thing that could ease the pain if it was a tiny jelly fish: put comprehension made of half vinegar and half water. If it eases the pain that was a jelly fish.

After put some betadine on.

Repeat if necessary.

If these are botfly larves the compressions will suffocate them.

Why don't you check at a hospital ?

we did - no one seems to know what is - we were just prescribed antibiotics. Both in Thailand and back in the UK. Just thought someone might recognise the symptoms

Find a better hospital. Private if need be (free if you have health insurance).

There are tiny translucent jelly fish on that coast that, when prolific during certain months can be quite painful when swimming.

You can't see them but sometimes you can feel them when the bump into you...the pain comes later. Perhaps it's that.

all my Thai friends said it's a spider bite. It should go away after a few weeks once the blister pops.

Seriously, don't ask for medical advice on FB. Go see a doctor. If you have health insurance it'll be free (if you don't it'll still be cheap). Probably will just need basic medication and topical cream.
Keven ****
@Claire *******
It could be anything. Did any of you actually feel the pain from this bite? Why would there be a spider biting multiple people? If you "wait a few weeks" like the other poster suggested, it could result in an infection, and eventually amputating the finger if it's too infected.

just looked up what bed bug bites look like and it’s definitely not that. The bites are generally isolated. I have one on my foot and another on my finger. And they are much larger than the ones in the images I looked at. But thanks for the suggestion
