If I was to order something off say Amazon in the Uk for the Uk market and delivered to the Uk, the items I order have to be of a certain quality/ tested to certain standards etc all protected in law with heavy penalties for breaches of say the Sale Of Goods Act etc

Does the same apply under a Thai law when/ if living in Thailand, if you order goods online from say Lazada for example, does the law offer any protection to the purchaser (especially if said purchaser is an Expat)

Thanks in advance

โ€œExample being, a while back, I ordered some LED light bulbs from AliExpress, something Iโ€™ve been doing for 15+ years, the arrived to the UK, live wires at mains voltage easily touchable when handelling the bulbs, a death trap for anyone silly enough (or naive enough) to use them and looking at the reviews, thousands had. My due diligence tests immediately highlighted the dangers, messaged the supplier with said dangers ๏ฟผand a full refund was immediately given with no expectations for me to return the items, sadly the items are still on saleโ€

TLDR : Answer Summary
In Thailand, consumer protection laws are relatively weak compared to the UK. There is little formal legal recourse for expats when ordering online from platforms like Lazada. While the site does have refund policies that work for some users, caution is advised as product quality may be inconsistent. Buyers are encouraged to check product reviews and prefer brands they trust. Overall, the prevailing sentiment suggests a 'buyer beware' mentality in the Thai market.

I used Lazada twice and will never do so again. Items received were complete rubbish.

You will get expired products and price tells you the quality of many electronics you may buy. Not bad overall.

To answer your question (which others have misunderstood), there seems very little QA on products sold compared to Europe and Scandanavia. I lived in the USA and was suprised at some of the substandard products sold in big stores but Thailand has very loose controls for standards it seems.

thank you Andy, yes, think the actual question lost in translation but I understand all the replies as yes, buyer beware ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

Have you noticed the sidewalks, zebra crossings, driving etc here in Thailand? That pretty much sums up what kind of protection you can expect as a consumer. Probably should keep your shopping to the Central brand if you want to expect โ€œqualityโ€ like back home.

Good luck....seems to be buyer beware here. No consumer laws it seems, but you can return stuff on Lazada and they good at refunds

I have returned items to Lazada and always receive a refund

I've bought a variety of things on lazada that either don't work at all or work so poorly that i just threw them out. If I want to be sure I buy brands that I know and then check product reviews on AMAZON before ordering the exact item on Lazada. Oddly enough most Lazada 'reviews' are videos of people opening the box! I don't get that at all!

Lazada has very good refund policies, though they can take time. I've gotten three refunds from Lazada over the years.

Very little legislated consumer protection in Thailand, but the civil courts are an option.

Depends on how important the person injured is and what connections the seller or manufacturer have. For your common every day person, not a chance.

Prevention doesn't seem to be a concept here.
