Australian passport holder. I need to leave Thailand by 22 October. Finishing a work contract. Iโve been in Thailand on work visa since 2019.
So I need some more time to find new contract, Iโm going for SETV for 60 days with the extension. I would just like to know the requirement of onward travel. How does that work when you get extension? You need to reschedule or just forfeit the ticket?
Also would the royal Thai embassy in Phnom Penh or Ho Chi Minh be better. I was going to stay about a week out of Thailand to get it done.
I just heard Cambodia is more strict and in 2018 and 2019 I went through Ed and visa exempt.
Looking for your helpful suggestions thanks ๐

TLDR : Answer Summary
An Australian passport holder currently on a work visa in Thailand, seeking to extend their stay with a Special Tourist Visa (SETV) for 60 days, inquires about the requirements for onward travel during the extension process. They ask whether a flight ticket needs to be rescheduled or forfeited and which location, Phnom Penh or Ho Chi Minh City, would be more suitable for visa processing. Responses emphasize the importance of booking a flexible flight, the differences in processing times between the two embassies, and the necessity of properly canceling the current visa and work permit before leaving Thailand to avoid future issues.
Ryan we wish you success in obtaining the Thai Visa you are seeking. Follow the good Advice given by Mods and others.

Company is cancelling my visa for me early next month. Maybe HCM is the better one for me based just on what Iโve heard. I donโt have a โhistoryโ. Been here legit on a work visa for almost 4 years
Tod Daniels sorry I did phrase it as a question instead of a statement. I believe I have all the rental acomm requirements. I can ask landlord if Iโm missing anything.
Sorry for accidentally posting a commercial link in the last reply btw.
I can't find an outbound airline that offers a decent cancellation policy. It might be best just to buy a throw away ticket IMHO.
book a cheap one way ticket to Phnom Penh from Don Mueang airport. Or book on a travel website which allows you to cancel within 24 hours... print out the booking and cancel the flight.
you're gonna show onward travel in the 60 days you'll get stamped in for so buy a ticket you can cancel after you get the visa
AND
read those proof of lodging requirements, if you're NOT staying at a hotel you need EVERY bit of paper they mention or they won't accept that as valid lodging.. Most people just book a hotel for 60 days that they can cancel after they get the visa
it's your responsibility to cancel your extension (a visa cannot be cancelled).
Is your company taking your passport to immigration along with your cancelled work permit and getting your extension cancelled in your passport? If not, they're not cancelling your extension and you need to do it.
If yes then you need to review your passport after you receive it back and ensure that your extension is clearly cancelled within your passport.
Phnom Penh is 3 working days NOT including the day you apply for the visa
HCMC is mandatory booked appt to get in the gate and 3 working days (including the day you apply) processing
Go to the website, READ the requirements, meet the requirements, wait the processing time, get the visa ๐
We rarely let on "what consulate is better" because it all comes down to your previous entry stay history, your ability to meet the requirements, etc. The best consulate is the one you can get the visa from ๐
Make sure you CANCEL your current Extension of Stay based on employment at the immigration office that issued it with documentation from your employer and proof you cancelled your work permit BEFORE you leave the country <- just stamping out doesn't officially cancel an extension and IF you ever work in thailand again it will bite you that you didn't cancel it correctly
