Apologies for the anonymous post for some privacy 🙏

I see quite a few ads promoting the 10 year LTR Visa and it seems an interesting option to optimize taxes and perks for someone traveling a lot for business and bringing in funds to Thailand for personal expenses.

Anyone here who has experience on applying and having one?

Pros and cons in terms of banking, work permits, taxation and ease of travel?

I’m currently on Non-O based Extension with work permit via my business and pondering should I switch to LTR.

52 years old but likely the Global Citizen category would be something I could qualify for.

Appreciate if anyone with experience on this able to share.
Answer summary
A user is considering switching from a Non-O visa with a work permit to Thailand's 10-year Long-Term Residence (LTR) Visa for better tax optimization and ease of travel. They seek experiences and insights from others about the application process, benefits like tax exemptions for income brought into Thailand, the reduced report frequency, and general advantages related to banking and work permits. Responses highlight the process of applying through the Board of Investment (BOI), categorizations for Wealthy Pensioners and Global Citizens, as well as some concerns regarding taxation and requirements associated with both the LTR and other visa options.

I’ve got the LTR for Wealthy Pensioners. All money brought in is Tax Exempt. Instead of 90 day reporting it’s every year unless u leave and come back then the 1 year report resets to the day you reenter. It’s multi entry meaning u can come and go as much as u want.

Exemption from 4 Thais to 1 foreigner employment requirement ratio. Fast track at airport. And any money you receive inside Thailand from working is taxed at max rate of 17%.

Visa is a one-time fee of 50,000 baht. No requirements to open or keep a Thai bank account.

The wealthy global citizen is the same benefits but different qualifications.

Easy to get too. Online thru the BOI. Applied and got my own in a little over 1 month.

thanks for sharing.

Do you know if the 17% income tax applies for all categories or only for the professionals ?

ExpatOwl The 17% withholding tax rate applies to High-Skilled Professionals, and only on employment income earned from companies in targeted industries.

thanks, I also suspected this could be the case.

The exemption on foreign income when brought to Thailand also not so clear case right?

ExpatOwl I was told it was for all categories. But double check w the BOI. Give them a call or email. They usually respond very quickly to emails.

Can you apply for citizenship on an LTR ? If youve already got a WP and are married I would be looking at thay for a long term permanent stay.

no, requirement is for 3 extensions of stay, LTR does not qualify.

been thinking about it but lot of documentation and the wait is something like 6 years or longer.

Looking to retire soon so likely give the work permit a pass in couple of years and while waiting the citizenship I reckon it would be good to keep that WP status just in case.

I have been on annual extension based on marriage for years. So I have that.

But its annual applications and keeping cash at bank and work permit is also annual hassle.

Tax implications when bringing in overseas earnings and so on.

90 days reporting although I travel so never do one.

LTR removes that tax risk mostly. And if I understood covering I only need to visit the one stop shop when my passport expires so hassle free 10 years visa sound good to me.

The LTR is a great visa and the category that is most subscribed to is the WP (Wealthy Pensioner) category. As you're already over 50 you could qualify for that category. ..

You apply directly thru the BOI (Board of Investment) LTR website. The process takes about 8 weeks right now to get approval. Then you schedule an appt at the LTR office down in the One Bangkok Building, they ink in the 10 year visa, a 5 year admitted until stay and a 5 year multiple re-entry permit

You do not need to use any of the people who advertise hawking the LTR (although if you're interested in that you can look on the LTR website for the approved companies)

Here's the website;

Here's the number of LTR's issued based on category too

thanks, very helpful.

I don’t have much in means of passive income for the pensioner category but maybe qualify under the global citizen depending on how they count net worth.

Will need to read the official web pages!
